In the middle of nowhere near Poltava, the train broke down. Most of us got off the train and stood around, talking to fellow passengers- both locals and tourists. We were close to a forest so it was easy to walk a short distance and find a tree to take a piss.
After a few hours, a maintenance engine arrived and the workmen went up on the roof to fix something with the electrical contact pads that ride the electric wires, and we continued.
The workers ought be most informed as to their legal status, since they have the most to lose if it goes badly. So their downing tools and running is probably an indicator that approvals, paperwork and such are not so solid after all.

They get news of a sort that is incomplete at best, and I imagine the specter of deportation and / or arrest, even if you have "papers," makes them very skittish, indeed.

Think about this- Every pay period that company submitted tax payments for taxes witheld from the employee and matched by the employer to the USA. Those payments were matched to a person and an identification number. And the USA did not raise any alarm...

When the identity theft was discovered the IRS placed a block on the number so it could not be used for tax purposes. We received a security code sent to us by the IRS every year to unblock the number. That worked for the first couple of years until Covid. We have not received a new code since so I am unable to claim her as a dependent on my return. No one at the IRS seems to be able to fix the problem by issuing us a new code. But hey, at least no one else will be able to file a return using that social - including us.

I was filling out some DROS paperwork and I asked the guy what that was, since there is a box for it on the paperwork.
He told me it is for people that have had their identity or SS number stolen and that if I had one I would definitely know it.
Said his buddy had one since his wallet was stolen a few years back and someone had been using his identity while committing crimes so his friend has to give it to the cops every time he is pulled over so they know it is the right person and not the person wanted for attempted murder.
I have heard of people that have to carry special identification specifically for law enforcement so they don't get picked up by mistake. I had a friend in So CA that spent a weekend in jail because my friend had the same name as a badass with warrants.
As far as the IRS, we got a new security code every year. It was fine until they stopped sending us the new number and we have not received one now for 4 years. No one at the IRS has been able to fix the problem by just sending us a new number. It has been a pain in the a**.
