I once read when you get uv through the eyes, skin produce melatonin which helps the skin tan.

Me, a ginger, gave up wearing sunglasses at once and never got sunburned again.

I hoped for a red head. My husband usually gets a few red hairs on his arms in summer. With brown & black hair parents it was hopeless. She was blonde until about four years old. I threaten him if I go totally gray I’ll dye it red. A guy I went to school with had the most beautiful auburn hair.

I have DARK HAIR on the sides and back and NONE on TOP!!! When I get out in the sunlight...the mood changes and that night...OOOOOH MY...SLEEP LIKE A BABY!!!!

Also, THE ONLY time I wear sunglasses is driving INTO THE SUN...that is all!!!!

There is something that can be said about wearing sun glasses all the time!!!

Do you mean melanin? If this was true, how come Australia still has the highest rates of skin cancer worldwide? (A bunch of white Europeans who were never adapted to Australian sun)

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 9 ▼
– moodyblue 9 points 1 year ago +9 / -0

Toxic sunscreen is the reason for skin cancer, according to many awake doctors. There’s a lot nontoxic sunscreen brands available. Look for reef safe brands. I try to avoid artificial fragrances, unfortunately most clean brands have it. I only wear sunscreen if I’m going to be at the beach or pool for several hours. With the exception of my face. I get sun poisoning so I use it on my nose and lips.

I believe that. When I was little, I don't remember ever burning when my Dad would take me down to the beach. We didn't wear any kind of sun screen lotion.

My wife and I were talking about this a few days ago. We were laughing about all the crap that gets lugged down to the beach when we go now. Chairs, umbrella, cooler, snacks, drinks, games, radio, etc. When I was little, Dad I would just take a couple of towels to sit/lay on.

We get our vitamin D through our eyes as well. Of course the medical field knew that by telling everyone to wear sunglasses and use sunscreen would make us all sick. Everything they have told us over the years has been a lie to push their products that do way more harm than good. Think about it. They said forget the butter. Margarine is better. Don't eat many eggs, bad for your cholesterol. Pasteurize the milk, raw is bad for you. It goes on and on.Oh how they have brainwashed us all. I have come to the conclusion that whatever the government says, we need to do just the opposite.

I drove truck for over 20 years and was also a professional fly fishing guide. I can't imagine being on the river for 8 to 10 hours without polarized glasses. So if your body gets sunburned fairly easy what about your eyes? I'm not saying there's not some truth to this especially in the morning I can understand that. What about snow blindness? Try spending the day out on a frozen lake discovered with snow with the sun beating down

My mother had an eye-injury (a monkey sitting on her head slipped and grabbed her eye-lid on the way down - LOL not-LOL).

She was advised to not wear sunglasses by the very accomplished Japanese eyesurgeon who happened to be visiting that hospital - and he saved her eyesight.

She did take off her very expensive 'polarized' glasses, and it changed her life.

yeah she was, she died ten years or so ago, but thanks.

Monkeys, unless trained from birth, and treated like a human toddler, i.e. wash hands regularly, eat with spoon, wear nappies, etc., - have dirty long fingernails that dig through poo, just to recycle corn nibbles. They like swimming to keep clean, but are not overly-meticulous about hand cleanliness.

By all means let them play with your hair for friendlies, (and take a shower after) but don't let them sit on your head. Also, tied-up monkeys can be very mean. From experience as a child ( I was bitten between the shoulderblades - very painful and infected).

And it helps prevent you from getting sunburn. My friend and I were talking about it at the doctor's office. She said that she read that sunglasses prevent the body from recognizing that it is in strong sunlight and does not trigger the brain to signal melanin production. She said she went on vacation and didn't wear sunglasses, just a hat and didn't burn. So I tried the same thing when I went on vacation to the Caribbean. Guess what? Beautiful tan and no burn! And since I am fair-skinned, blue-eyed and dark-haired I believed that I was predisposed to burning. What a friggen lie!

▲ 4 ▼
– HunnyB 4 points 1 year ago +4 / -0

Well now you can order eyeglasses on your own from places like Zenii I pay around 100 every other year for an eye exam and I get my prescription from the eye doctors. My glasses are between 40 or 50 but i go for cheap frames. In all my years I've had one dishonest eye doctor try to schmooze me to get expensive eyeglasses from him, he neglected to tell me the prices on the upgrades. I sicced my daughter on him lol. She's the nice version of me, an she got everything handled. My last eye doctor was incredibly honest told me my eyes stayed the same and I didn't need new glasses, and they had no qualms about just giving me my prescription so I could order on my own.

This is all true, but I have to say that I hate when people insinuate that unfettered sun exposure is just the risk free answer to everything. I have Fitzpatrick level 1 skin and my opthamologist said my irises have no pigment, are basically clear. She was exaggerating obviously, since I'm not albino, but she was saying that my eyes have very little pigment to protect themselves from the sun. People like me (Northern white people) are not adapted to sun exposure, so we need sunglasses and sun protective clothing and even, gasp, sunblock depending on the environment!

Where you live makes a difference in how that sun hits ya. 4 pm driving into the sun you are BLINDED at times of the year here. Also, cataracts run in my family and sunglasses protect my eyes against getting them (at least as soon). I won't be giving up my Transitions any time soon.

This is goofy. The melanin in the skin is produced by the skin; it has nothing to do with the eyes or what the eyes see. (Same thing with vitamin D.) The eyes do not respond to UV; the lens filters it out. Excessive UV will hasten the aging of the lens toward the formation of a cataract. UV blocking is a design requirement for artificial lenses. It is bad for the retina. If the sunglasses cut light intensity by 50%, that will not harm you. The natural variation in eye sensitivity is much greater than that. Polarized lenses will do that, and also block light that is horizontally polarized, such as reflections off water, which is a primary source of glare. You get all the blue light you need from skyshine (which makes fear of computer screen blue light kind of silly).

I'm speaking from a career involving making intraocular lenses and having read all of a thick university textbook on ophthalmology. If you think this is a good idea, go up on the ski slopes sometime without eye protection and go blind. There is the famous scene in "The Four Feathers" (1939) where Ralph Richardson's character is stranded in the desert and goes blind from the overwhelming sunlight. The moment is captured in the Miklos Rozsa score by the sound of a hammer hitting an anvil. (A good film and a good story, as a meditation on courage.)
