HUGE! The Supreme Court will hear a property tax case that could change, or even prevent, local governments from foreclosing your home for back taxes | If won governments will have to pay you the FULL value of your home minus what’s owed | Me: This should be retroactive and apply to all homes stolen (twitter.com)

Excellent. The stories that I have heard really piss me off. They should never be allowed to take your home for taxes. They can wait until it’s sold. Government is not going anywhere.

I should not be taxed on owning a home that I paid money with that was already taxed.

If you want to tax $2 million dollar mansions, go ahead. If you want to text land that is leased for farming, go ahead.

You cannot tax me for something I own.

Also, the idea of emminent domain is also unconstitutional.

I agree. Property taxes mean that you don’t own the property, you are just renting it from the government. My Great Aunt used to sell pieces of her farm land to pay for the property taxes.

It makes your property a cemetary. Cemetaries have a process to be established but once it is done, cemetaries are typicall not taxable.

Awesome this is great! Hopefully next they'll make it so foreign countries, and corporations can't own houses. It's getting stupid.

They're buying up supply, homeownership is way down. this may be a short term win but it'll get eaten up by the aforementioned

I like this. I hope SCOTUS chooses the homeowner's side.

But...

This is complicated. I guarantee you that people hard up for cash will forego payingtaxes and treat it like a credit card... "I'll just pay the taxes someday when I sell, if I diebeofre isell, then I win."

Well, when a community is dependent upon real estate taxes for basic services, then there is a risk that the income will drop significantly.

Thenwhat?

The rate goes up and those who pay will pay more.

What we need instead is to get rid of real estate taxes.

I know seniors that have lost their homes that they have lived in for decades because of property taxes. This is a crime. In addition, the speculators circle the auctions like vultures knowing they can swoop in and pick up those properties for far less than what they are worth. Then they flip the properties with little or no input and make huge profits. The only ones that lose out are the people who are left without a home and little to nothing because of the devalued auction price. I have no doubt some of the county tax officials are in cahoots with many of the speculators. It's a racket.

Developers are evil. They attend these and out bid any private citizen who is looking for a deal. You have to have deep pockets if you go to a tax sale.

I knew a guy years ago that had previously worked for the government in Black Ops where he lost an arm. Amazingly, he still flew planes and was an instructor. He was also an avid gun enthusiast and even made the cover of some gun periodicals. I didn't press him on how he got his money and how he lost his arm. Part of me wanted to know, but part of me didn't. He didn't volunteer the info, and I didn't ask.

He bought several properties at tax auctions as well as properties owned by couples getting divorced. He would walk in and offer cash to estranged couples and they would quick deed the property over to him - far below market value. It was cash in hand for the couple without the headache of a court ordered sale. He amassed around twenty properties this way over several years that provided him with a steady comfortable income. He worked because he wanted to, rather than because he had to.

He rented those properties out at very fair prices and never raised the rents just because he could. He much preferred having good tenants that would take care of his properties. He hired property management to collect the rents and keep the books. Every year after expenses were paid, he would divide up what was left in the account between the properties and tell the tenants he would pay for some kind of improvement that they wanted. He reasoned that it gave his tenants an incentive to maintain the property by having a personal stake. If the tenants did the work themselves, even better. He would pay the tenants the difference of the budgeted amount. It was a win win for everyone. Some of his tenants he had for well over 10 years. he wasn't trying to get rich. As long as his own house was paid for and it would allow him a little financial freedom, it was all good.

Unfortunately, nothing good lasts forever. His wife decided to divorce him and blew up the whole system. She didn't understand how any of it worked. The court divided up the rentals between them, The ex in about 6 months managed to lose all her tenants by jacking up the rents and basically being a bitch. I lost contact with the guy not long after the divorce, but I have no doubt he recovered by picking up additional properties the same way that he had done in years prior. The ex-wife, not so much. I think she was forced to finally sell the properties.

If the fraud is gone from the community those "property" taxes would not be nessary to fund it. Local sale tax is enough in many if not all "communities"

I was thinking along the same line - someone could avoid paying a realtor to sell their house. Don't pay the taxes, have the gov deduct the taxes when they buy the property at full market- make government pay realtor when they want to recoup their money they have in the property.

So we live rural. There are homes up here that are dilapidated, forgotten for 100 years. The "family" owns the property after Grandpa or whoever died, and they just pay the tax on it and let it go to rot.

Of course the animals take it over. I'm not talking hood animals, I'm talking real animals. We are rural and in the mountains!! The family forgets it's there, maybe they pay the tax, maybe they don't. If there was no tax sales, these forgotten houses and land would be forever forgotten, and no one could steward the land. It's private property, even though no one knows it's THEIR private property. unless great niece Sally finds the deed and goes looking for it.

I am not for land or house tax, but I am for an alternate solution to families just forgetting about their property. It getting lost to history. They don't even know enough to sell it. We have had to track down houses and land a few times, and when we find the owners, sometimes after a long records search that originates on microfiche still, they are disinterested and either don't answer or blow us off. We just want them to take care of it.

So there is a problem tax sales solve, however I would love to have another solution to the problem than the county or State owning it and being able to sell it, and collect money off of it forever and ever.

– what_like_with_an_ax 2 points 242 days ago +2 / -0

You could have the same system with no money requirement barrier, AKA no real estate tax.

For example, reaffirming to the county you would like to keep the property, with a system in place to actively reach out if people aren't doing so themselvrs.

If people aren't even willing to testify...."Yes, I still want to own this", when it might be taken away, then there is no aggrieved party.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– usernametaken4 1 point 240 days ago +1 / -0

Then you will run into "I didn't get the letter" or "My Mom was sick/dying/going through treatments/whatever else and I couldn't do it!!" Also, then who owns the property when it is taken away? The county again. Or city, or state. They sell it, make money. Give an inch... they'll take a mile. Eventually the government entity that is able to take property if no one claims it will change their rules and slowly weasel their way into getting the property easier, quicker, and with choosing which property they get.
I just don't know how to do it without weasly people eventually manipulating the system.

"If won, governments will have to pay you the FULL value of your home minus what’s owed."

Part of the problem with property tax is the counties get to assess the value of your house and can attach any arbitrary price they want (usually too high). Who will be the one doing the assessment of your house when they have to buy it from you, will you get lowballed? Will they use tax assessment or market value?

I do remember that case "Public use clause" ruling went 5-4 in favor of city.

Though it sort of backfired on eminent domain supporters, leading over 40 states to enact reforms limiting eminent domain for economic development; the New London project ultimately failed due to lack of funding.

If we don’t have property tax, where does funding comes from to maintains our roads, schools and emergency services? I love the idea of these crooks not being able to take your home for free for not paying taxes.

permalink save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– AmateurExpert 1 point 241 days ago +1 / -0

where does funding comes from to maintains our roads

  1. Gas tax
  2. Federal income tax
  3. Tolls
  4. Registration fees
  5. Probably 2-7 other taxes

schools

Given the state of schools, not funding them is almost a benefit of itself, but there are other methods to fund them than property taxes. Look back at 19th century school funding mechanisms.

emergency services

Some fire departments were private into the 1970’s and beyond. Police and fire were both performed by local volunteer militias, akin to how the Cajun Navy is so effective after hurricanes. God bless them!

I HIGHLY recommend looking into these things… being ignorant of them is part of how we got here.

Property taxation means: (1) they can tax at whatever amounts and rates they choose; (2) they have a ready pot of gold for whatever they want to waste YOUR money on; (3) as others have said, they have NO right to tax anyone's properties except perhaps when a property is purchased; (4) they can embezzle, siphon off, divert whatever funds they choose for themselves; (5) you never own your "own" property and that includes your car or truck; (6) their participation with Agenda 21/2030/UN rule comes to a screeching halt when property taxation is ended. It's all a colossal theft.

This whole scam MUST be stopped in its tracks. Stop the property taxation and watch how your local government shrinks. The people need to decide what services their public servants are to oversee and how those services will be supported.

DeSantis is trying to end property taxes for home owners, Florida businesses.

Continue to collect Property Taxes from out of state owned property like snowbirds that only come to Florida for three months during the season, and keep property taxes in place for out of state B&B properties. Something like that.
