In the 70’s when the US started posting road signs with kilometers as well as miles, my grandfather said “ that’s so when the damn Russians take over, they won’t even need to change the signs.”
They did that for a few years when Jimmy Carter tried to go Metric system and he quickly gave up. Metric system is way easier to use but you know how we do love 5280 of one thing equals 1 of another and 128 equals 1 etc and not just 1000 / 100/ 10/ 1..
Metrics is way easier for math and science, but the English system does make some sense for everyday use because it formed from everyday experiences. A foot is about the size of a foot so you can quickly approximate size by lining up your feet. A yard is roughly one pace so you can approximate larger distances simply by walking it. Inches really are ideal for measuring construction materials and snowfall, as the smaller metric units of cm and mm are really too accurate for these and the next SI unit up, the dm is too large. The Farenheit temperature scale doesn't make much sense until you realize that he lived in a fishing village on a bay and was more concerned with when the saltwater of the bay would freeze, so based zero on that, and the degree size is more ideal for measuring changes in temperature. The Celsius degrees are too large IMO. No, you don't really want to do things to scientific accuracy using English units, but when we need to do complex calculations, we have SI. So perfect situation.
I'm an engineer who has to work in both systems and I agree. Conversions are way simpler in Metric but most English units are easier to visualize and approximate when you don't have a measuring tool on hand.

We have maybe two pictures or videos of buildings getting "bombed" when one of them was proven to have come from a Ukrainian artillery unit using a poorly maintained gun.
whats the source on that. I saw video of a shelling that was geolocated and i was convinced comparing the video to satalite footage that it came from the south... no notion it was an accident though, and not convinced of whichever side fired the munitions. How do you know that was due to a damaged gun?

Still not getting the Kyev (or Kyiev) vs. Kiev thing. Both languages use the Cyrillic alphabet so changing the spelling in English makes no damn sense. Ки́їв is the Ukrainian spelling, Киев is the Russian spelling.

Hmm. Russians would probably pronounce it Kee-ehv, but it sounds to me like there is a very slight (English) "yeh", not as noticeable in Russian. Not sure how Ukrainians pronounce it, but it still doesn't make sense to change the i to a y when writing it in English.
The cyrillic "е" is pronounced "ye" in Russian so "Киев" in Russian is pronounced "key-yev" and the Ukranian "language" pronounces it "key-iv" and the wordmasters are trying to make sure we say it the Ukrainian way so we do not legitimize Russia and that "key-yev" is the correct historical pronunciation

What Russia did back in 1950s, with the fall of the Soviet Union between then and now, really doesn't have any bearing on their capabilities now. They're still flying a Soyuz launch vehicle the majority of the time, and while it's very reliable, it's from something like the 80s. Since the end of the American space shuttle program, the US through NASA and private companies have created, built, and successfully launched 2 low Earth orbit launch vehicles. Not to mention the multiple deep space launch systems that are in development. And Russia continues to use the Soyuz.

I asked a Ukrainian friend who is from Kiev (left the USSR in the late 80s) and they said Kyiv and Kiev are both legit but yeah weird how suddenly everyone in the media is insisting on using the other spelling out of nowhere.
from my knowledge the most rational one would be: Kiyev .

I'm surprised these cameras haven't been banned by Youtube, or global service providers really. Especially that top right one, I check into it frequently. Just people living everday, regular life. Cars, foot traffic, everyone casually sauntering around going about their day. Very interesting.
