My guess is they are going to indict Trump.
Wouldn't put it past them. But it needs to be more that "a threat to our democracy".
They are saying a “significant national security matter”. They will somehow claim the Trump had “top secret” documents at MAL that he shouldn’t have had.

The strategy of setting a precedent that will apply to them as well, is, imho a false hope. The law is irrelevant to the lawless. It's like quoting scripture to those who do not recognize it's authority. It means nothing to them.

The use of the term “nation-state” makes me think it’s either a country or entity, not one person.
Isn’t a “nation-state” outside of the DOJ’s jurisdiction? I would think it would be about an individual(s) that are here in the US that are acting on behalf of a foreign nation.

No former president has ever been indicted. Trump would gladly take that arrow in the back which would springboard to several former presidents being indicted in the future. Future proves past.
The Trump indictment would be in relation to Jan 6th event. President Trump was still President at the time and it is my guess he confiscated the video surveillance from the Capital that day.
Why have we not seen any of that video footage? Most likely Trump has it and plans to use it when the time is right.
All these politicians have secret service protection and would have been on the scene on Jan 6th. I bet the secret service confiscated the video footage. This would be the best evidence to clear President Trump from any future indictment and incriminate the people who pushed the fake insurrection.
