Yes! and for some reason that reminded of the pure red dye tablets you chewed that supposedly showed plaque on your teeth. Mucho red dye ftw.

Mom made us gargle warm salt water. I still remember being little gargling

I remember the salt water, too. Later on, it was gargling with a an aspirin tablet crushed in warm water. It still works!

My mom told me if I did a good enough job scrubbing the dirt out of my scrapes, then she would not have to scrub them. It was a genius move, very empowering.

Merthiolate is not Mercurochrome.

Merthiolate is much stronger

Merthiolate --- burns

Mercurochrome --- doesn't burn

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– Deplorable_in_PA 4 points 3 years ago +4 / -0

Even better if it came in a brown bottle with an expiration date from the 1960's. Didn't they ban that crap because it contained mercury? Well no matter, Grandma kept that brown bottle in her medicine cabinet and used it on me and somehow I survived.

Now that Sprite has HFCS as its first ingredient* and the Campbell's Soup has started adding soy lecithin. The saltines are the only ones that aren't changed. :/

ETA: Correction. HFCS is the second ingredient in Sprite. After water, before flavor.

permalink save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– Modeler42 4 points 3 years ago +4 / -0

Uh…there’s no high fructose corn syrup in sprite. First ingredient is water

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– GoldenFlame 4 points 3 years ago +4 / -0

Sprite has HFCS, always has. You're thinking of Sierra Mist.. which was ruined yet again to "Starry"

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– Wtf_socialismreally 2 points 3 years ago +2 / -0

Starry ranges from "okay" to "total shit" depending on the batch for me. It doesn't scratch the same itch, for sure.

Critiquing "always has", because high fructose corn syrup hit the market in 1967 (though it wasn't until the 70s that it hit the beverage market), whereas Sprite hit in 1961.

Sprite originally used sugar to the best of my research, which while still not ideal, it's leagues better than that garbage.

Which also contains more fructose than advertised now, to boot.

▲ 1 ▼
– Modeler42 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

What ingredients list are you reading that has HFCS listed as first?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 3 ▼
– GopherEverett 3 points 3 years ago +3 / -0

Directly from the website: Water, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Citric Acid, Natural flavors, sodium citrate, sodium benzoate (to protect flavor).

Yes, water is the first ingredient, and yes, HFCS comes second.

Ah, I’m looking at the UK ingredients

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– GopherEverett 4 points 3 years ago +4 / -0

Fair enough. Correct me if I'm wrong, but the UK is stricter about ingredients than the US from what I understand. The FDA is a malevolent force out to keep us fat and sick.

I miss real Vernor's (grew up in Michigan) but the sugar was replaced with HFCS like nearly every other soda (called it pop growing up).

▲ 2 ▼

Replace that Sprite with Vernors and this is about right. Michigan boy also. Even with HFCS it's still a go to when feeling a little under the weather. Comfort item I guess. In Missouri now and it's not easy to find.

Ginger Ale for tummies. Honey/lemon tea for sore throat after a saltwater gargle. lol Lots of porridge, sticks to your ribs. Early to bed, early to rise. If you don't work, you don't eat. Idle hands are the work of the devil. God helps those who help themselves. If you want a helping hand, you have one at the end of our arm.
