If they are looking for people to tighten the belt, and squeeze all the green out of every dollar, I recommend my wife. Although the entire country would need to see a shrink after her first couple of weeks on the job.

Should have been remote positions. Seems counter-to-the-plot for us to waste personal time in traffic to go to a government job about eliminating government waste.

Absolutely.

Got excited, checked it out. In-office, in DC.

Not just no, HELL NO.

Not only is it in office for software engineering (why?), but it's in DC, the shittiest of shitholes.

So I guess he'll recruit from the 90% democrat base in DC, Maryland and NoVa?

Ugh....

I unfortunately don't live anywhere near D.C. so commuting to D.C. isn't even an option for me. And no I don't want to uproot my entire family for a temporary government position.

Musk is shooting himself in the foot by not allowing remote work here.

Bullshit!

It's a scam only if mid management does not give people clear roles and duties. When you provide clear roles and duties.

It's easier to know which API metrics to judge performance. Do you know how many jobs out there have no real measurable attached to it?

Coming to the office means what? Some manager LOOKING OVER YOUR SHOULDER and CRACKING THE WHIP???

In my experience remote is more productive for the good workers. If you shave commutes you may even increase productivity. In office has the commute and all of the overtly social interactions, water cooler chat, and walk-by distractions. FWIW.

▲ 8 ▼
– thephantom1979 8 points 1 year ago +8 / -0

This is correct.

If a company has to have workers in the office. That means they are hiring none "self starters".

These are the types that needs a baby sitter. Why hire those types of people to begin with.

Only once, in my 40+ years of working, for about a year, did I have to report to an office building.

For me, working from home did not mean I could loaf. It meant I never left the office and could work till mid-night.

Every time I took vacation my parents would say, "Are you sure you shouldn't be down there working". My dad very rarely ever took a vacation, and worked from 8am to 11pm 6 days a week. Many days he worked much longer, and he loved every bit of it.

On the other hand this is a temporary position and by the time people relocate to there months of potential work would have been already lost.

If people are getting the work done, who cares where they are working from?

If they're not getting the work done, then why aren't they getting fired?

For many, their productivity increases as they work from home because they're not constantly being interrupted by Chatty Cathies and office birthday parties and other such nonsense.

It's also positively hilarious that people think that just because someone shows up to an office to work that they are automatically productive. Obviously they've never seen anyone exhibit the fine art of looking busy while doing nothing at all. Just frown at your computer and click your mouse repeatedly and people will think you're super duper productive.

Remote workers save companies money by reducing the need to pay for office space.

The only people I really see getting upset over remote workers are middle management type of people. Those whose jobs are basically looking over their employees shoulders and scheduling endless rounds of office meetings that spend hours accomplishing the same thing an email or two will do.

I was kind of under the impression that Trump was going to decentralize government departments, put some of them in Red States. Like move FBI would of D.C. and move it to Texas, or Florida, or Oklahoma.

Does not make sense to have a DOGE located in the most inefficiently operated geography on the planet.

Generally, most Federal Workers fall under a General Scale (GS) pay rate. It's not luxury living, but it's a stable income.

And as an individual that has seen RIFs, offshoring, companies dissolved or acquired - without stability, you have nothing.

No. If I live 90 minutes away, that's 180 minutes of drive time each day. That could be 180 minutes of looking at government waste, but instead it's spent looking at bumpers. How is that efficient?

They're rejecting some of the potential best and brightest employees simply because well over 99% of patriots that would love to work this job, don't live in D.C. and aren't willing to move their entire family for a temporary stint.

When I worked at the Pentagon, I knew civil servants who commuted further than that, believe it or not, the benefits of a gov't job with retirement were a very strong motivator.

Drive to train station, leave car, was one strategy. Rinse repeat. Some drove in from PA.

Not thinking it makes sense for a short term gig. I had an apartment 10 min out by bus; I often ran to work and back. The POAC gym had lockers and showers!

Higher officers with families lived far out. They would drive in way before the rush, and leave way after. Worked long hours, but also spent time at the POAC!

This is not some "lifetime" position though, it's a department that is only to be around for a couple years. Not moving halfway across the country for a gig that has a short lifespan.

Would that make it the shortest-lived government department ever? Serious question.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 5 ▼
– Hodar 5 points 1 year ago +5 / -0

Quite possibly, the intent was a One and Done approach. To extend the department without a termination date, would be simply empowering a predatory department, without limits on expansion.

This agency gave itself a shelf-life, identify waste and go away.

Doesn't mean it won't be re-instituted from time to time.

It has been proven that long hours and productivity are unrelated. Also, a job takes as long as the time we set aside to do it. 15 min increments to work as fast as possible are incredibly useful and motivating. As we have seen, federal employees have long since taken advantage of punching in for long hours! This job description is a waste of resources and needs to be eliminated!
