BIG ANNOUNCEMENT!

You asked, threatened, even offered bribes (no joke, someone PM'd me, offering me $1,000) to fix the way our WIN's search works, and, for so long, our answer has sucked. We can't. As a .WIN, we benefit from the (may peace be upon their devs) main codebase given to all the WINs by the devs. So sometimes, when search doesn't work, we can't really do anything about it.

UNTIL NOW.

Thanks to our in-house coding genius, u/Bubble_Bursts, we have found a way to AWESOMEIZE our .WIN's search via a convenient .JS addon script you can download into your browser that adds some rogue, unauthorized features!

The script lets you scroll forever 'till the end (no pages, which makes searching for something way easier), and, well, that's it. But that's pretty fricking awesome and saves a ton of time!

Here's how to get it:

STEP ONE

Get TamperMonkey for your browser here.

https://www.tampermonkey.net/

Tampermonkey is the most popular userscript manager, with over 10 million users. It's available for Chrome, Microsoft Edge, Safari, Opera Next, and Firefox.

STEP TWO:

Download the script. TamperMonkey will automatically install it. Get it here:

https://files.catbox.moe/29hfz4.js

NOTE: If it doesn't automatically install, you will have to make the script inside the TamperMonkey's dashboard. If this proves necessary for lots of users, would one of you mind whipping up some quick instructions? I'll paste them here.

That's it! Oh. One more script is coming as soon as u/Bubble_Bursts is finished with it that will also awesomize a different feature.

Any suggestions? Please send us a DETAILED modmail.

Enjoy!

PS - to the user that offered me $1000, please use this Bitcoin address:

(kidding, can you decode that?)

Thanks to all the people giving valuable feedback.

Special shoutout to u/CoolAsACucumber/ for giving detailed instructions!

Please reply to this stickied comment ONLY if:

Nice.

But to those who are looking to enhance their search queries, it seems that a search with the regular search engine is preferable, still.

Howto:

Read it, test it, use it to your heart's delight. You'll be amazed what you can find beyond what big tech allows you to see with the standard mode of operation.

Sorry not sorry, hell I don’t know. I don’t use a computer much. Mostly phone. Soooooo………..what is a user script and why do I need to manage it?

3
S_N_A_K_E 3 points ago +3 / -0

user scripts are little programs made by users to "enhance" the functionality of websites.

You don't need it. But if you did, "tampermonkey" is like an extension you add on your browser to easily install/uninstall and use the user scripts.

OR you can just click "next" on the results or use google search lol

2
Litecola2 2 points ago +2 / -0

I like using Google searches sometimes just to mess with their algorithms

1
S_N_A_K_E 1 point ago +1 / -0

and you can search the data within the articles and even comments, which is not possible with the current search algo in GA.

I could crawl and index the website myself, but I don't need to.

Always remember, install responsibly. JavaScript is one of the more vulnerable, which is fine as long as you don't go around downloading and enabling random, unvetted scripts.

Obviously this post is an additional caution sign, not aimed at above poster!

Searching specific users?? Won't this make doxxing a hell of alot easier?? I usually am but I think people should be pretty careful about posting any info that could indicate their location or associates

4
Wtf_socialismreally 4 points ago +4 / -0

I just searched your name and your bathroom habits showed up. Stop clogging the damn toilet!

On a serious note though, you can already search specific users through any engine that indexes this site with enough patience and knowledge. This just helps make it more user friendly for average users.

NOT_ADMIN 10 points ago +10 / -0

Okay u/Bubble_Bursts, let's do this, why not setup a Git repo or if you want we can just use pastebin or something but we can have a set of code live somewhere, and then a bookmarklet to append that js code to the site. The benefit is that people can just click the bookmarklet or chrome extention, it also means this doesn't have to only be about searching, we can add other features as well, since the bookmarklet / extention would be to the source location, we can change the source and everyone is auto-updated. We can even do DOM replacement allowing for a larger amount of changes. Let me know if you want me to create a script to showcase what I mean.

6
bubble_bursts 6 points ago +6 / -0

Planning a git repo, and yes I plan to add more features starting with infiniscroll for users posts and comments, but beyond that whatever people here suggest. I was thinking of adding another feature to the current script where you can filter the search with another term/phrase/username to hone into the results.

And yeah happy to let anyone fork and contribute.

BTW, you were the one who gave the horizontal scroll CSS the other day right? I was gonna push it in, but then realised it was truncating text posts. Didnt get around to fixing it.

4
NOT_ADMIN 4 points ago +4 / -0
  • That all sounds really cool.
  • Yes I was suggesting a quick css feature but it can be better.
  • Another thing could be a pretty neat feature that's only client side but neat anyway, which is css color scheme control, and save the settings to a cookie or session.
  • Another idea from the top of my head would optionally turn external links into iframes when clicked or a btn next to it that can scale just like images. Idk about that one just a quick idea

I saw that. Is it fixable at all? Pls at having a look at it at the bottom of your list?

THANK YOU u/Bubble_Bursts !!

It works for me! I copied the code in the Catsbox link.

https://files.catbox.moe/29hfz4.js

I installed the tampermonkey add on per the instructions above and clicked on the extension (on the upper right corner

https://files.catbox.moe/ro5yrw.png

I pasted u/bubble_bursts code into the tampermonkey add-on in a new user script

https://files.catbox.moe/m7wkv7.png

I saved the file

https://files.catbox.moe/294l37.png

I checked the script enhancement and set it to enable

https://files.catbox.moe/isehkk.png

Then I pressed start

https://files.catbox.moe/svte16.png

Now I can endlessly scroll GAW searches while this script is enabled.

Any of you please let me know if you need help and if there's any step I missed adding in here.

One thing I'm noticing is all the comments automatically sort by NEW instead of TOP. Not sure how to fix it. In Preferences my default sort for comments is set to TOP

I found my instructional twin! There have been so many jobs in my younger years that I did this. Productivity of clients & staff went through the roof.

It always amazed me that no one else thought a good step by step guide with Screenshot were a good idea.

5
CoolAsACucumber 5 points ago +5 / -0

Well if you know anyone looking to hire, I'm on the hunt for a job right now :)

4
HonestBobbin 4 points ago +4 / -0

I left the field almost 13 years ago & never looked back after seeing how it destroyed our clients lives & the top brass refused to consider pushing back against bad practices with partners.

Any technical "coaching" or "entrapanuer" field field that is teaching/educating those looking for a new career really needed this skill set a dacade ago. They likely still do.

I fell into an incredible opportunity that I never expected & found a potential new project I am testing until businesses want to invest into employees & growth again.

5
CoolAsACucumber 5 points ago +5 / -0

Well I've been a programming/math tutor, an engineer, and have gone to school for more data science/analytics. Looking for a job is not fun right now even if others are saying it is easy. Everyday I wake up peering on the edge of a cliff. The only people around to talk to is GAW.

If you know someone hiring please lmk.

2
Litecola2 2 points ago +2 / -0

Meantime, please consider looking around for homeschool co-ops, they almost always have high school science and math courses going on and with the sharp increase of home schooling families, teachers, mentors, tutors (whatever they need to be called in your state) are in need. And you do get paid some. Also home schools generally are keeping to the original schedule, where public skool has shifted everything out 1-2 years, meaning grade 5 material is now died for grades 6 or 7, I kid you not.

1
HonestBobbin 1 point ago +1 / -0

Certainly fren.

But seriously, divest your Crypto unless you already have at least $1,000 current market value worth if silver stashed away.

EDIT: I SUGGEST divesting Crypto.

2
SvixGale 2 points ago +2 / -0

Why do you suggest getting out of crypto right now?

You are supportive of precious metals, esp. silver?

Can you please share your thoughts & opinions on this?

1
GoingCamaro 1 point ago +2 / -1

Crypto is limited by an active grid. No power, no money. So unless some backup grid system that is secure can be established or some form of tangibility integrated, your limiting your access. And it's starting to tank anyway.

Ironically enough, silver is a conductor of electricity and has practical value all around. Also it's tangible. It's value isn't properly recognized, but our monopoly money is fake and inflated anyway so whatever.

Crypto is a good idea, but in practice it needs more foundation and bolstering. Decentralized, set value is something to strive for, we just gotta make sure it's fair and secure.

6
catsfive [S] 6 points ago +6 / -0

Is 400+ oz of silver OK? :)

Also, and not to conflict with your advice, but DCA into crypto. I'm buying...

4
Emyrylde 4 points ago +4 / -0

Does this allow for searching within the content of posts and not just the titles as it has been?

5
catsfive [S] 5 points ago +5 / -0

Not yet. We can only pimp out the search the .WIN gives us, so, no. But this makes finding a title keyword very easy, as it compiles it all into one page.

8
Emyrylde 8 points ago +8 / -0

Does it work with Brave?

6
bubble_bursts 6 points ago +6 / -0

It does, I use it on Brave. It should work on any browser that supports TamperMonkey extension.
