I know people that have been in this country 30 years that don't speak English.
There are black people in the 'hood that cannot speak English and they've gone through our primary education system and secondary education system. Ebonics is not a language but is readily available to all blacks. Let's try to eliminate that language and have everyone in America speak the Queen's English.

With stupid programs like “no child left behind” they just push forward anyone and everyone so their school rankings don’t go down and lower the real estate markets. In my very blue state (that Scott Presler is working to turn more red), there are many towns that you cannot even get a job unless you are bilingual in Spanish and English. My brother and many of his friends lost jobs because of this. It's been very unfair.
California is like that. Went for an interview with the county. Everything went really well until the very end when they asked "Do you happen to speak Spanish?" When I said "No" the entire interview panel's expression changed.

Can you order a taco? Then the answer to "can you speak Spanish?" is YES. Badly, with little skill, but you CAN speak some Spanish. If you are not getting paid extra for fluency, you are fine. Next ask for tuition assistance for your language classes.

good!!! i'm sick of going to stores and hearing announcements in spanish.... having to press 1 for English!!! time for ALL illegals to be tossed back to where they ARE legal and anyone that wants to legally come in must learn the language BEFORE applying to come in.... that'll give them plenty of time to think hard whether or not they want to come to the USA to be Americans and be fully assimilated. if they want to bring along their 3rd world stench, they can stay home.
If someone comes here with one language, I think it would be fair and consistent with past practice to allow them a year to become proficient in English and pass a written and spoken exam. My great-grandparents who immigrated spoke only German and Dutch, but they were diligent about learning English. So also those who came from Sweden and Norway, giving rise to the proverbial "Yah, you betcha!" The point is that they were earnest about assimilating...and people from Europe are accustomed to languages being different if they move sufficiently far from one's birthplace.

Based to Space. I had a customer try to flirt with a minor employee in Spanish. Creepy man, 17 year old girl. I could feel something was off, but didn't know the language. She had to wait in the break room because LPs weren't allowed to toss his ass out. Just had to wait until he was gone. I hope ICE comes to Tulsa in good time.

People need to realize that this is more than just a convention. Our entire political and legal system is based on law written in English, which means we go according to the meaning of the concepts expressed in the English language. It is the language of our historical continuity and our literature and our Christianity.
