METFORMIN. Made by Merck, sold as Glucophage. Another possible miracle drug? My struggle with alcohol became BAD over the past five years. I'm not diabetic (tho diabetes runs in my family), but taking this every night has helped me kick the bottle FOR GOOD. Anyone else? TRY THIS if you need it!

Ordered Berberine a minute ago, thank you. I asked God to get rid off my alcohol habit, but he knows I'm weak. So he showed me this... First thread I saw today on gaw, later in the day it would be so far down that I wouldn'd have seen it.
Thank you, Lord.
edit: oh, it's a stickie now. This is God's exclamation mark.
OMG. Brother. This metformin stuff is an absolute MIRACLE. It's OTC here where I am, too!
I don’t understand what it actually does? It relieves the compulsion/desire to drink? I’m not a big drinker these days but definitely have the addictive personality.
It apparently causes the liver to not produce glucose as aggressively. That's how it'd been described to me. I'm in the Middle East/Africa right now, and a lot of old drugs that have off label or other uses that the psychotic drug companies don't see profit in don't want to promote because they aren't actually about making anyone better.
Type 2 diabetes is not a disease per se, it's completely induced by your eating habits. It's curable if you really want to. Go to youtube and search for "intermittent fasting" or "type 2 diabetes" and you should come across some great info. Basically our bodies aren't designed to be eating all the carbs we eat and as often as we eat. If you reduce your eating time to between noon and 6 pm for instance, you'll be halfway home. You can move the times around but basically you want to give your pancreas a break from producing Insulin for as long as possible each day. That will start bringing your insulin resistance back down to normal levels so your cells will absorb the glucose more efficiently.
You can help all of this by greatly reducing your carb intake, essentially a keto or carnivore diet. So a few months of keto combined with not eating for 18 hours a day straight, will drop your blood sugar way down. Get your A1c checked also, something doctors don't always check. If you are above 5.6 (and some would argue 5.2) then you need to get on that program. There's a lot more to the explanation of how all this works and if you are on Metaforin, it will do you a lot of good to understand the exact mechanism for how it works. Most of these meds cause other issues.
Good info. Right now I'm not type 2, and I'm cautious. I test my blood every morning, and so far, every time, I'm within normal range. I'm also taking your advice re carbs. I'm cutting way down, and it seems like just naturally I'm starting to eat only twice a day.
Eric Berg has lots of good stuff regarding this on YouTube.
https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=eric+berg+diabetes
Also be on the lookout for an ingredient called Maltodextrin, it's nasty stuff. It is the highest glycemic ingredient out there. It isn't classified as a sugar but acts like one. The problem is that it's in everything because it's cheap as shit. Even health food companies put it in everything. youtube.com/watch?v=Dkbu16d0qX0&t=423s https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6566235/
Add mylitol to that.
Yes my mom had type 2 and she doesn’t have it anymore because she watches what she eats and I habe been helping her too. Even honey can give you a lot of sugar in your body.
So can too much fruit.... people tend to over eat these too much when diabetic thinking they are eating healthy. But they are still injesting too many carbs if they eat too much fruit.
100% this!
Yep. We have to be careful with fruit too. I am telling you this because I have big nasal polyps and I have done everything and if I eat fruit or any type of sweet make more phlegm and a lot of nasal drip which gives me nausea all the time. I am going to see another ENT to fix it for good.
Soooo israel then?
I’d guess Egypt.
Alcohol is very high in sugar content. Alcoholics are usually sugar freaks. My husband hasn't had a drink in 30 years but boy can he consume the sugar! Not a diabetic but many of his family members are alcoholic and diabetic.
What dose of Metformin do you take? Is it between 0.5 - 2.0 mg per day as the videos suggest?
One minute, one hour, one day, one week, one month at a time Anon. Dont know if you're a "meeting" type of person, but they do help a lot of people, but you need to work the plan. You got this. Stay busy and avoid the behaviour and friends that lead to slipping. I know that is a canned response, but it does work. If you fall, step back up.
Ty for your kind words, fren. I know how it works, I've been sober for nearly ten years when I was 34, but the last five years kicked me back to the addiction. For whatever reason. I felt safe, how bad can one beer be? Or four, or five? Or a bottle of wine? Or some good single malt? I can quit whenever I want to. Yeah, for sure. I lie to myself. Now I'm five years in and just have enough.
The first time I got rid of alcohol I went to a therapy for three months, now, with a little help, I will to do it on my own, together with my wife.
It's not like we ruin ourselves, we have a good life, wonderful kids, we're awakened, but we just drink too much. We can't be fully awakened when we take poison on a regular basis. This is stupid.
I had a lot of addictions in my life, cocaine, extasy, cigarettes, amphetamine, I got rid of all of them, alcohol sticks to me. But my mindset changed due to the awakening, so I'll get rid of the alcohol, too.
I found back to God, and he doesn't want me to drink. When I was on my own, I chose to drink. I'm not on my own anymore.
I can’t say I’ve really been addicted to anything but your words stir me. I’ve dabbled and experimented with everything short of needles. The relaxation of pot almost got me but the apathy and the constant drowsiness steered me away from it permanently. I didn’t like being a dull sword. Alcohol though, whew man, alcohol. I want to think I don’t have a drinking problem as I don’t drink to get drunk. I just love beer. The flavor of the craft beers are so amazing and a 10% beer is about as smooth as Coors Light. I keep playing games with myself though like limiting the amount I drink, limiting the days I drink. In the end the volume at each session is not the issue but the fact that I have to keep having sessions is a clear dependence problem. Drowsiness is rearing it’s ugly head with this too. The biggest guilt I feel is the pull and the coveting beer more than Jesus at times. Am I getting drunk. No. Am I loving something more than Christ. Yes. Thank you for your words. They remind me of that great song I’ve heard a 1000 times before I noticed what the words actually say and the meaning behind them and how song becomes even better. As steel sharpens steel so it is with men. Godspeed in your battle and to Him be the glory. With renewed confidence I will be fighting alongside you.
It's a battle and addiction is f-ing tough. I have been down that path. I know for some 12 steps and programs help, I struggled with that route, did it and got my chips and a cake. Dont beat yourself up, step back up on the wagon and move forward. Meetings help, a sponsor helps. It will get you thru the rough patch and help you get your stuff together. One step at a time, you got this.
I hear berberine has the same positive effects, but is missing some of the bad side effects. Plus is a lot less disturbing to the digestive tract, and you don't need a prescription for it. I have been researching and taking berberine for a while, and just coincidentally, I had just finished watching this video comparing metformin and berberine when I switched over to this page and saw this post: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QNy56C1_Xis. If you're thinking of taking either of these, check it out. IVM also reportedly helps with diabetes, autoimmune conditions, and cancer treatment. Glad I stocked up several months ago. :)
You can get metformin online no rx. Not naming vendors but it's pretty easy to obtain
Berberine and metformin are secret bodybuilder supplement s due to the insulin resistance caused by large doses of GH/IGF1. Daily timely doses are very effective at lowering resting blood sugar, lowering the damage caused by large GH doses.
Once berberine stops working, then it’s time for metformin. I can see about an 12-18 point drop from it in my morning blood sugar.
Just ordered. Seems to have several benefits, too.
Congratulations! My father took Low dose Naltrexone and it had the same effect. He was taking it to fight his cancer and was so proud that he stopped drinking all of the sudden. It’s really nice to hear a positive story for a change.
I read once that many alcoholics are hypoglycemic and the alcohol calms the stress of blood sugars bouncing around.
When I stopped drinking I replaced it with sugary foods, so I believe it. Still use sweet desserts at night in lieu of alcohol. Not fat though since I keep a relatively balanced diet and I'm active physically.
I really do think a Lot of "alcoholics" are actually hypoglycemics. And have anxiety disorders.
I wasn't able to get prescription Metformin, but I used berberine with great results.
How often did you take it and it what dose?
If once a day, did you take it in the afternoon/evening?
I was taking it after my last meal. I'm not taking it anymore, because I do intermittent fasting. I eat a late breakfast at 10 and dinner at 2. I fast for 20 hours everyday, sometimes I do full 48h fast and I don't need berberine anymore. I don't remember the exact dose.
For sugar, or to reduce alcohol cravings?
for everything above and longevity!
Congrats to anyone winning their battle.. woke up to another Sunday morning without a hangover.. thankful as hell to have a few years without alcohol after years of it ruining my life. Life’s a little boring now sometimes but it’s so much better than it was back then.
Been prescribed metformin for years and refuse to take it. It causes severe intestinal turmoil, so be ready to miss work. It is not a miracle drug. It is produced by big pharma. Seeing this post, and having contrary experience, I had to say something. Good luck on your fight with addiction. Quitting is a choice. Without a reason to quit,, that trumps your selfishness, no drug will get you there.
What kind of intestinal turmoil?
Violent diarrhea for me. I'm sure everyone is a little different.
You may have had some parasites.
May have had poisonous blood sugar drug too. IVM gave me the squirts first time, but not since. Probably because of parasites. Metformin gave me violent gravy blasts every time. If you guys find salvation in it, great! I'm just sharing my experiences. Even if wrong about it being bad, many people will not be able to take it. I'm hard pressed to believe that it is a miracle drug.
Not a fan of it either. Hard on the kidneys.
I have been on it for a few years and have definitely experienced the intestinal turmoil. If I take it before eating breakfast I almost can’t not throw up. Taken after breakfast results in a guaranteed poopoo within an hour. Though I have heard from a pharm tech friend that this is only really an issue with the generic metformin due to its delivery mechanism. The pill basically inflates in your gut and scrapes along the sides of your gut for it to be absorbed. You can actually see the pills in your poop, I thought I had a parasite or something the first time I saw one.
Did the same to me intestinally but it did regulate pcos and type 2 a1c beautifully as well. I stopped when pregnant and breastfeeding. It passes thru milk and they have no studies for what that might do to an infant. Sucks that my periods are all over the place again and I had to start insulin in its place but small price for baby. I do keto too
For GI upset take as little as what won’t cause that. Like 1/10th of the pill and raise every two weeks until side effect goes away.
You can also, ahem, use Metformin as a suppository and yes it’s fine to take that way all meds can be given rectally. It absorbs way faster but this is only for supplements as anyone’s regular medication needs to be for sure regulated strictly.
In that case it might come right out but it works like a charm, lol. Once your gut is empty you can try again but I do so at night and add a little water. Yep I’m stubborn!
We know about rectal routes in medicine in nursing because they used that route a lot before there were more meds to try, because people would get an upset stomach.
I had nothing like that. Not saying that you did anything wrong, but for me, I have to make sure to take it with food, a good meal, and I drink maybe almost a half liter of milk with every pill.. So far no problems.
I thought you said it happened every time. How long did it take til you saw the side effects?
Everything I experienced was mild, and right at the beginning. Now I test my blood every morning to make sure I know what's going on and so far I'm always normal.
I'm glad it works for you. Will not work for everyone. The side effects developed over time for me, and I've tried empty stomach, full stomach, morning only, night only, etc... I really wanted it to work for me.
Have you tried rectally?
That’s what I do, but only 500 mg. Only take if you can head to the bathroom though or after you empty your gut out. I add a little water. I’m very, very stubborn when it comes to my health though and after five years you can tell.
My baby sister is 4 years younger and she’s pissed. She’s now taking it. Maintaining your blood sugar will age you less rapidly.
Get yourself some GYMNEMA SYLVESTRE. It's a supplement made from a perennial shrub. In Ayurveda medicine, the name of this plant translates into "sugar destroyer". It is natures metformin.
Metformin has long been known to help with depression. Not at all surprising it assists with many kinds of addictions.
Yes because high blood sugar is the root, causes inflammation in the brain.
THIS!!!
I hardly eat any sugars or carbs yet I have depression.
This has been out for a long time.
Basically it’s not a diabetes drug, it doesn’t lower your blood sugar so you can take it if you’re not diabetic .
What it does is even out your blood sugar so no high glucose spikes.
Studies show that diabetics had longer lives than healthier counterparts. Lower cancer. Because sugar is acidic and a high blood sugar creates that acid state which encourages cancer.
Been on it for five years, I’m healthy. Normal weight,
I’m 49 but look at least ten years if not more younger, my body age is probably 35 or so. It’s because I’ve been doing this healthy diet, supplements thing since I started caring for old people as a late teen. It freaked me out so I follow this stuff and it works.
You can buy metformin online from overseas it’s five cents a pill. Can cause stomach upset.
It’s made from the French lilac plant.
Do you think going on a strict “keto diet” have the same effects?
I have some intestinal issues, depression and inflammation and am about at my wits end with it and am seeing over and over just recently that sugar is the root of many physical issues.
What is your opinion of a low sugar diet, as in just eating natural sugar that happens to be in fruits and vegetables? I feel like God provided us with those things to eat and if we were intended to JUST eat meat we would have sharp teeth and short intestinal tracts.
Keto helped me more than I can even assess at this point.
I had intestinal inflammation and some IBS, so I started drinking kombucha. After about 6 weeks, the issues were relieved for a year. Then they came back.
So I took some ivermectin, for five days. Worms came out. My intestinal issues went away. Three months later, took it again. More worms.
My intestinal issues have been gone for about nine months, now.
Yes keto does the same thing but modify your low carb diet. My diet is always low carb. Keto has a problem with too many bad fats, you need omega three fish oil in greater amounts.
Well, fish isn’t the only source. Snack on walnuts or pumpkin seeds.
I highly recommend to take fish oil or buy cod liver oil that’s high quality. It’s the highest source of natural vitamin D.
Remember all those kids having to take cod liver oil? It’s because of the high D content.
There’s a problem with them making those D supplements they aren’t in a natural matrix for absorption.
Look for Nordic Naturals cod liver oil, it tastes good actually, like lemon, no fish taste none. No one would buy it otherwise.
I’m sad I didn’t get back to your post right away I hope you see this. I’ve helped countless people and I’m normally in my own practice as a holistic nurse.
So here we go. I suggest first for this cod liver oil because humans evolved on fish and shellfish. Then wham, we changed to farming, even Jesus mentions fishing! Everyone ate fish!
We call omega three fatty acids “essential” because unlike other proteins and fats we can’t make this from other fats.
Almost all diseases in mankind are because we stopped eating fish and seafood as a main source and changed to farming methods. Our bodies have not adapted.
Every cell in our body uses fats as receptors so take your insulin receptor.
Imagine a house, the window is a receptor, you have a windows shade you’re going to place on the window and that’s insulin, it tells your cell to open and be fed.
Well after a while if your body uses omega 6 fatty acids (olive oil) to build that receptor the window is crooked, in fact the window is offset by two feet on the top right and two feet on the bottom left. Now you can’t hang the shade.
Over time you lose receptors and even if you’re not a diabetic, you’ll gain weight.
We see in study after study, omega three fatty acids lower risk of diabetes. People who live near seas have low diabetes and depression, the two are connected because omega three fatty acids also make the receptors on the neurons!,
This is hard work, I make sure that my fish oil is the main fatty acid meaning only a few slices of cheese or butter. I take krill oil caps on top of the fish oil.
We are talking a primary deficiency here that fans out to cause all the other problems people are having.
Imagine it, 3 million years of humans fishing to ten thousand years of farmed animals.
This isn’t talked about enough. This is my primary goal in starting people on health. I want you to first get your receptors straight before we talk about fixing anything else.
Do you want to text me? I’ll give you a free consult.
651-274-8246
This is the kind of person I am, I would help anyone get their health straight.
Next, eat low carbs as best you can, if you do keto it can help drop weight fast but you’ll screw up your receptors unless you do fish fat keto and I can’t imagine it would work.
Don’t eat olive oil, that turns into inflammation - you can have a little.
Eat two pieces of fruit in between meals, fruit acids are like vinegar they slow down digestion but yes do look up the fruit that might be too high of calories, you decide. That will help you cut your meals in half because you’re getting fed in between. This trick doesn’t always work but try it. Yes you can and should eat fruit!
Cut your calories by doing intermittent fasting.
This is just like taking Metformin.
One day cut out 1/2 for fasting. The next day eat normal. Every other day fast one meal or two meals whatever you can handle. This will lengthen your life and you will lose weight.
You can slam a shot of apple cider vinegar if you eat bread, pasta or sugar, this will slow down digestion just like Metformin.
In fact don’t do keto, do low carb intermittent fasting and fix your receptors first.
It will take six months to fix them on the fish oil, cod liver oil. After that you’ll drop weight like crazy and with the high vitamin D your depression should get much better if not disappear.
I will tell you more but I want you to commit to just two things first, get the fish oil, cut all the other fats unless it’s walnuts, pumpkin seeds, flax.
I’m posting a list and then https://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/what-should-you-eat/fats-and-cholesterol/types-of-fat/omega-3-fats/
And try the intermittent fasting. Fasting does the same thing as Metformin.
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/lives-the-brain/201001/was-seafood-brain-food-in-human-evolution
So they are saying here 2000-3000 mg of fish oil. Which is a tablespoon of that cod liver oil a day or three tabs a day of the fish oil tablets. I don’t trust the studies, I look at rates of diseases in people who have a diet high in fish like Japan, Finland.
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41398-019-0515-5
Remember when they do studies they might throw two fish oil tabs on top of someone eating cheeseburgers, lol. The best results come from limiting other fats and bolstering omega three fats.
Just do the best you can. Don’t completely change everything, just try on the days you feel like it and never shame yourself for not taking the supplement or eating a cheeseburger. I cheat all the time.
The issue is, you feel so good eating healthy that you don’t want to stop. Depression clears up, my blood work is perfect for cholesterol.
Diabetes runs in my family, badly, and it’s not related to weight gain. Out of all the cousins and there are 12 of us, I’m the only one not diabetic or prediabetic.
It’s the fish oil. And the Metformin.
https://www.everydayhealth.com/type-2-diabetes/far-from-finished-fish-oil-may-help-fight-type-two-diabetes-but-link-unclear-3125.aspx
Wow thank you so much for the in-depth advice!
Never really considered that humans might NEED something in fish. I know people have sworn by fish oil/omega 3 supplementation, that’s for sure.
I will do what you suggested, taking fish oil and trying IF. Both of those are quite reasonable and what you’re saying makes sense.
Is this a good one to get?
https://www.nordic.com/products/arctic-cod-liver-oil/?variant=39472186589368
As far as eating good omega 3s only, I’ll try… easily done for my personal meals but I’m also in strong agreement with your other advice, of not being so strict that it makes life awful- not giving up burgers anytime soon :)
By “ One day cut out 1/2 for fasting.”
In other words, one day a week don’t eat breakfast or lunch or snacks until dinner, and the rest of the week skip an occasional meal or two as a bonus?
Thanks again for the advice, I really appreciate it!
Worked for me.
I eat some fruits and veggies too. But I stick to berries which are relatively low in carbs or even a banana a day is ok.
The biggest key is to get your body into ketosis. So for two weeks I would zero out carbs entirely. You can take a home urine test to see if you're body has entered ketosis as well.
Metformin is prescribed for diabetics and pre-diabetics as a treatment to avoid having to progress to insulin and last stage situation...BUT its also taken by some of the leading longevity researchers even tho its not available for that use. They find a way to get it for themselves because apparently there is a lot of evidence that it prolongs life.
Yep that’s why I take it, online pharmacy. I take it to lower my cancer risk and life extension.
I am Diabetic. I have been on Metformin. I have never struggled with alcohol, but I have to admit that we've dated quite a bit over the years. There was some heavy petting going on after college before I got married.
My appetite for alcohol has been an ounce or two a night before dinner-- no more. It's been that way for decades. I'm right now on the max dose of Metformin, and I can say that I have never seen any changes for my passing desire for my evening cocktail. My glucose is well regulated, and so a little nip before dinner doesn't seem to hurt my morning readings.
What I will say is that Metformin seems to be a drug with all sorts of interesting side benefits. Study up. This may be the first real longevity drug that is available to the masses.
Yes. I'm aware that some of the top experts in the field of longevity take it themselves
Congratulations on sobriety!
I don’t think metformin is truly a miracle drug. A large percentage of the US population is on it either due to Type II diabetes (caused by Big Food) or PCOS/infertility struggles (caused mostly by Big Pharma and Big Food.)
It can help somewhat with inflammation, but that’s because of the leveling of blood sugar spikes. Which not eating crap they sell as « food » also helps to gamme.
It kills cancer, too.
Interesting! I’ll have to read up on the side benefits of this drug.
As an aside, I was led to an anti-anxiety supplement, through the fine folks of GAW, called Levium. Being a hella stressed out husband and dad of two youngns who also refuses SSRIs and benzos (I have 3 different loved ones completely trapped on that hamster wheel), I figured what do I have to lose besides a few bucks? I’ve been taking it for about 2 weeks now and I have to say it seems to be working as advertised. My anxiety is maybe a 1/10 at it’s worst, my depression and irritability is also noticeably improved and seems to be improving daily. No complaints!
One of the unexpected side benefits I’m noticing is a huge drop in my desire for my nightly beers and/or wine. But it’s not just that “I don’t desire it”, as I’ve “not desired it” for a long time, yet the obsessive-ish compulsion remained and I’d have my drinks whether I actively wanted to or not. Lately, I haven’t even thought about drinking. The compulsion is gone, the thoughts are gone and it’s almost like I completely forget to drink at all, which is quite something because my pattern has been the same for years - crack first beer while making dinner, chug it quick, crack 2nd one to savor, 3rd beer during dinner itself, 4th one for dessert. Not the worst drinking habit on the planet but a habit none the less and the relief it once provided has long since been replaced with a dull numbness and sense of guilt.
So if anyone is struggling with anxiety and stress and all the little gifts it bestows, I can definitely recommend trying Levium.
https://levium.com/
Have a great day, frens ✌️
It got me pregnant the first month after 8 years trying. It regulates pcos. It's a miracle.
CNN: METFORMIN RAPES AND IMPREGNATES WOMAN
Yeah, headline: BEWARE NEW DATERAPE DRUG
Followed by a planned parent hood commercial, a vaxx commercial, an HIV commercial, and a medley of commercials with multiracial Trans families.
OHMERGAWD
I used to take it for PCOS, which is related to diabetes, that I didn't have but is in my family.
Why did you stop taking it?
I had a very mild/borderline case and my doctor said I no longer needed it. I was fine without it, honestly, and took it mainly because we were having problems conceiving.
We did, but it took invasive measures. It was not an easy road at all. :(
I hope you can conceive soon!
I was unable to conceive still while on it but ivf would have been alot harder to do without a clockwork period considering all the attempts we needed. It definitely helps you ovulate at a regular time and so periods went from 30 to 50 day cycles to 27 to 29 days. Worth the diarrhea for curing the Long cycles
I dont have any issues with alcohol but love when you guys post about medication! Thanks for posting
Naltrexone worked for me. +10 years alcoholic.
I think there are several excellent cues out there for those willing to dig.
I take glucophage daily to keep my body in shape
Bookmark thanks
Thankfully alcohol isn't a problem for me. Somehow I just got tired of it and stopped.
Congrats!
I was prediabetic a few years ago I found out going to a rehab for drinking but having lost weight, quit intaking tons of carbs, and mostly stayed on the wagon, my blood sugar is normal.
Hopefully soon losing more weight I'll come off my blood pressure medication too. I take a few supplements but want to get away from anything made by big pharma.
Taper off please whatever you do. Don't go cold turkey. Booze, barbiturates and benzos are the three that can kill you during withdrawal. I should know.
I went cold. I knew I shouldn't but. I was right on the edge of having to. I've quit maybe a total of five major times in the past two years.m, maybe dry for 180 of those days.
Yeah the times I quit cold turkey I was drinking over a gallon of vodka a week, and at one point 5 liters of wine oer night to go with my nose candy addiction for prolonged periods and never saw the major withdrawals often talked about. Shakey hands yeah, but nothing actually serious.
But I get everyone is different. Heroin withdrawal was an actual existential battle, though I know it's not supposed to be fatal.
Good luck, just keep an eye on your BP and watch for negative symptoms
a pill to help with your "will power"...really?you're addicted to bad behavior not alcohol.
Your comments are proof positive why “normies” (as alcoholics call non-alcoholics) will never understand the “alcoholic”. Normies somehow believe that it’s just a matter of “willpower” when in fact there is a physical and a psychological component to alcoholism. Normies aren’t really qualified to comment on the condition of alcoholism.
your assumption is wrong. many have beaten alcoholism without the use of drugs and group therapy. they just don't whine in public about it.
Well good for them. Everybody’s different however. I know many alcoholics and I work with them. Some can beat alcoholism cold turkey without any help and others need more help. But just because they need extra help or want more information about what may be able to help them doesn’t mean they’re whining in public about it.
bad behavior is bad behavior.
Absolutely. And I’m certain you have bad behaviors too!
