Yup... Starbucks "coffee" tastes like burned floor sweeping after some manufacturing process has finished for the day. Never saw the attraction myself.
Over the years I admit I have become a coffee snob and will no longer drink coffee out in public, ESPECIALLY Starbucks. I cold-brew my own at home and it has spoiled me from drinking that hot-brewed sludge offered in cafes and restaurants.
Not in my experience. I'm not a fan of licorice, so I think I'd notice. It might have to do with the blend of beans you use and how they were roasted, as well as any other mix-ins (milk, whatever) you might add.
Us, too. We grind our coffee every morning. R/O filtered water. Drip maker. It’s better than anything we can buy. Sometimes we make Vietnamese pressed coffee in the afternoon for a guaranteed pick me up.
I take coffee to a hgh ritual. I no longer hot brew coffee, it's too acidic for my taste. I have discovered how to cold-brew coffee and it is an entirely new experience.
I got a cold brew coffee set from Amazon (a Japanese thing that cost about $18).... it consists of a carafe, a mesh infuser, and a seal-tight lid. I buy decent beans at various stores around town (Sumatra from Indonesia, Yirgacheffe from Ethiopia, or even Trader Joe's dark roast) and grind them to Espresso fineness.
I fill the carafe with filtered water up to where the threads start. I put the ground coffee in the infuser up to where the mesh ends, seal it off with the lid, and then let it slowly sink into the decanter (at its own pace, can take a few minutes) and then seal the whole thing up, give it a few shakes, and put it in the fridge overnight. Anytime I pass the fridge, I reach in and shake it some more, turning it end over end to make sure the water is getting to all the grounds.
Twelve hours should give you a nice thick coffee concentrate, but I prefer to let mine go for AT LEAST 18 hours, sometimes even 24 or 48 hours.
What you end up with is a thick coffee concentrate that is about 70% less acidic than hot brewed coffee. DO NOT try to drink this straight, it just might blow your head off, it's that strong. I fill a cup to about 1/4th full with the concentrate and then pour filtered water in it. Good rule of thumb, you should not be able to see the bottom or sides of the cup if you've mixed it right.
Heat that in the microwave for about 2 minutes and you'll have the best cup of coffee you've ever had.
Coffee in its natural state has a sweetness to it. The first time I tasted actual cold brew coffee, it was Sumatra beans from Indonesia, grown in volcanic soil that gives it an almost "chocolaty" taste and naturally sweet. Later I discovered Ethiopian Yirgacheffe and liked it even more. Also good are Trader Joe's Bolivian and Sumatra beans and a couple of their dark roasts. I just take it to their in-store grinder, set it to "ESPRESSO" fine and let it grind into the container. To me (IMHO), the finer the grind, the more bang for the buck you get.
Brewing coffee is really a matter of allowing the oils of the bean seep out of the grind and into the water. So the finer the grind, the more coffee oils you get.
I don't consider this a "down side" (although some may), but with that level of fineness, I get a tiny bit of sludge at the bottom of the carafe, but as I said, I don't mind it, I just pour that out... maybe a tablespoon or so of it. It just tells me that I got all the coffee out of the grounds.
I put my used up grounds in my compost barrel, as it adds nutrients to the compost, and then to the soil when I plant my garden in spring.
I tend to like strong coffee, black and robust, but not acidic. That's what I find with cold brew. You can mix the concentrate as strong or weak as you like it, experiment with it some to find your preference.
For me, as I said above, I make it strong enough that I can't see the inside or bottom of the cup, and it never causes me acid reflux. One-quarter cup of concentrate, fill to the top with filtered water, microwave 2 minutes, ad VOILA!
I'm so spoiled with cold brew that anything else from restaurants or at meetings is just so much swill to me.
Glad you liked it. I've never tried store-bought cold brew coffee, I just jumped in with both feet on the advice of a blogger I used to love years ago. He passed away and his blog fell silent, but for the years that I did read him, he was a treasure trove of interesting information, technical expertise in many fields, and an all-round curmudgeon just like me.
So after he posted on cold brew, I simply bought the brewer from Amazon and tried it... did some trial and error at first to find out what worked best, and the method I laid out is as summation of my experience with the stuff.
You may find that you prefer it weaker or stronger, or that a different grind works for you. My method after about 18 hours of steeping (shaking occasionally) comes out VERY strong, just the way I like it. I still have to combine the concentrate with water before heating and drinking, but it's strong enough that I cannot see the bottom or sides of the cup. It's pretty intense, even after adding water.
Good luck with it. My method is just a springboard for others... your mileage may vary and you might want to tweak or experiment with the method to suit yourself. My wife on occasion will ask me to add a little cream when it's a coffee variety that is particularly dark and strong, but she most often just has it black like I do when it's Sumatra or Ethiopian Yirgacheffe.
Nah, I LOVE dark roast. I want my coffee to be strong enough to not be able to see the bottom or sides of the cup, strong enough to invade Poland if I so desired, strong enough for a spoon to stand up in it.
The trick is in the brewing. Cold-brew dark roast and you'll have the best (and strongest) coffee you'll ever taste. Hot-brewing brings out all the acid in coffee. Cold-brewing brings out the natural sweetness in coffee and reduces the acid by almost 80%.
I get StarBucks cards every year from my family during birthday and Christmas because I have been their biggest fan. Oh, should tell them not to send it now. I knew they were going into the toilet when I couldn't buy almond croissant.
Read about the demonic sea creature they have on their cups , you’ll no longer be a fan. Hard to tell they are going down in my area , I see lines always ..

The coffee is way overpriced. I hardly ever buy it anyway what with me being a college student and everything. With a $15 percolator and a $5 blender I got from Goodwill, plus a couple other accessories and ingredients, I can make literally anything they have on their menu for pennies

Labor isn't as big a part of the equation as we have been brainwashed to think. I worked in a factory bottling soda and the plant manager told me labor was 1.5% of costs. Someone posted a comment claiming that labor averaged 17% of the costs in manufacturing overall.

I can't find this online but I do find that he was misquoted.
"During an annual shareholders meeting in 2013, a shareholder said that Starbucks was losing customers because of the company’s support for gay marriage.
In response, Howard Schultz, the CEO of Starbucks at that time, said the company will continue to embrace all forms of diversity. Schultz told the shareholder, “If you feel, respectfully, that you can get a higher return than the 38% you got last year, it’s a free country. You can sell your shares in Starbucks and buy shares in another company.”
A few articles over the years either misquoted Schultz’s exchange with the shareholder or took his comments out of context."
Starbucks is a herd mentality psychosis for people without ability to think....or tastebuds.
Case in point: sheep pay near $10 for a cup of terrible coffee. So bad, they have to ADD all these ridiculous flavors to cut the shit taste which, by then, isn't coffee anymore but somehow think they're "fittingly trendy" because of a stupid logo on the cup. They'll do this 5 days a week, sometimes more, just for the false validation of having Starcucks shitty coffee.
That's straight up stupid when you can buy a Mr Coffee maker for $20 that'll last near forever and bags of pre-ground as cheap as $7, that still tastes better than Starcucks, AND will last more than a week (for normal coffee drnkers). So first week cost do it yourself we'll round to $30, vs Starcucks $50 1 per day for 5 days.
I’m not so sure he feels the same way anymore. It was either a CEO or an owner of the company whose daughter or son went trans. Once that happened, they took all their gay stuff out of all of their stores. No more gay buttons and such. So I’m not sure he feels the same way anymore.😂🤣
I've never liked Starbucks because they roast all of the caffeine out of the beans. They'd already nailed their own coffin shut IMHO but their CEO certainly added some superglue. For me, it's home brewed, highly caffeinated light roast, for this 8 cup-a-day (coffee) junkie.
I buy green coffee beans and roast at home (it's actually quite easy; a heat gun used for paint stripping can be combined with a flour sifter, and if you really want to get fancy, use an electric drill to turn the sifter :) ). The taste of fresh roasted (you have to let the roasted beans "air out" for a few days before you grind and roast) coffee is sooooo goooood! One thing I learned from this is, the darker you roast, the more flavor elements are lost (burned off and replaced by "carmelized" elements). This means that even old coffee can be dark roasted and it will taste fairly similar to fresh beans that are dark roasted. This is probably the reason Starbucks features so many dark roasts, and some people say "I don't like Starbucks coffee because it tastes burnt!". So I'm glad there is one more reason not to buy Starbucks! (we already avoided them because of their known "woke" culture)
It's digusting stuff, and now has digusting policies to go with that. I knew a barista and he said they had chemicals in the coffee, which is why it is so lousy.
OK
Howard Schultz is a fuckwit
Exactly why I've been boycotting Starbucks for years. Also, it's gross.

👍🏾 That's my diversity thumbs up. 😆
I bought some cold brew in the store yesterday to try it before I bought the equipment.
You are absolutely right. I can drink it black, I usually use only half and half, there is no acidity and it tastes great.
I guess I will purchase the equipment to make my own.

Condensed somewhat...
I just got a $50 gift card from someone today. Wonder if Starbucks will give me cash for it?
Oh, you might be able to. That would work. No hurt to ask.
True that. I can imagine being asked why I want to cash it in and then just staring at the non-binary purple-haired nose-ringed loser
Just tell them you need that cash to buy food instead.
Ultimately, the over-roast their beans. Not great coffee. But they're consistent.

Smart. The coffee I love the most was Seattle's Best unless I can get the import from Laos.
Otherwise, I just need coffee for staying awake. I add Dandelend in mine. It's wonderful.
One mouthful of one cup. Never again. BUT THIS! Any truther who buy,s this swill NOW?
We used to have them at every corner in Oregon and Washington. I only like their almond croissant. Several years ago, they disappeared so I never buy anything from them again.
Not a problem! Don't go into your shops or buy anything you sell anyway so will be easy for me not to buy your coffee, you wacko.
Howls. Crazy what they think they can get away with saying stupid shit like that.
I have paid for their coffee twice. Back near 2ooo and I thought it was stupid.
They do have some stupid coffee but have you had their almond croissant?
Marriage has been going on since Adam and Eve, but this guy knows better??
He certainly believes he has the secret ingredients in his coffee.
I only bought from Starbucks once, years ago. It was in an airport and I got a hot chocolate. It was the most disgusting stuff. People with me agreed after tasting it.. Starbucks coffee is nasty, fucking Folgers is better.
The coffee tastes yucky. Almond croissant was the only good thing.
Ever use a French Press to make coffee? Makes a great cup of coffee out of ok coffee. I mostly use flavors in my coffee, almond croissant sounds good.
They have the best almond croissant. I used to buy 6 at one time so I can snack on them.
Coffee, no thank you.
Marketing marketing, in the Philippines I saw a coffee shop chain that touted their using only robusta beans. LOL
Like the Barbecue restaurants touting "Emm Brisket"
Robusto is the crappy cheaper bean, just like brisket is the toughest piece of cow meat. Smoking sure does wonders, but I'm pretty sure if you smoked better quality cuts it would be even yummier.
I should look for a French Press and not Chinese made. LOL
My french press doesn't have where its made stamped on it, but its all metal, and quite well made. Was a gift, so I dunno where it came from.

So as far as I know Starbucks is squeaky clean until proven otherwise.

Considering opening an enema clinic franchise with High Hot coffee enemas, thought I would call it "Starbutts".

Like Black Rifle Coffee but in, um, reverse.
Howls. Now I understand why you called it "Starbutts."
I already haven't been buying your coffee though.
Nice. We like Peet and Seattle Best.
Seattle's Best is owned by Starbucks. Maybe cut down to Peet's if they aren't woke. 😃
Oh. They were sold. I understand.
🤪💩☕️
You and I both. I don't buy their coffee. I make my own. I just go there for their almond croissants and when it went away four years ago, no more.
It's crappy bitter, burnt coffee and no, I don't buy it.
Yes. It's bitter.
They also started in the toilet.
Certainly. They do start there.
I never like their nasty ass coffee.
Me neither.
Thats not hard… don’t buy it anyway… it tastes like burnt ass….
Amen.
These people are fruit loops.
Snowflakes fruit loops from the NW. LOL
I’m not so sure he feels the same way anymore. It was either a CEO or an owner of the company whose daughter or son went trans. Once that happened, they took all their gay stuff out of all of their stores. No more gay buttons and such. So I’m not sure he feels the same way anymore.😂🤣
Too late.

That's not really him, is it?
Someone mess with the video?
I haven't heard anything that disproves these videos. So far, they're legit.
That's funnier than hell. He is a good dancer, but OMG. Pick this guy for the world stage.
No problem, I’ll just keep buying Peet’s since it’s better anyway.
These idiots don’t know when to quit
Peet is good.
Their coffee tasted bad.
no problem
LOL
Your wish is granted! These idiots will never learn!
Amen.
That's amazing info. I thank you.
Ah... But WHICH toilet? Men's or women's?
LOL
It's digusting stuff, and now has digusting policies to go with that. I knew a barista and he said they had chemicals in the coffee, which is why it is so lousy.
You all convinced me now not to go there. Thanks.
It's a deal, faggot.
LOL
