Real ID has a chip in it. I don't know what bearing that has exactly, I also don't know if Passports have the same. I just don't trust anything with a chip. If it has one, there is likely a nefarious purpose.
Go to the passport office at the post office and ask them, don't ask random internet strangers. A couple of minutes with your favorite search engine will also get you a partial answer.
This is also my plan. I don't know how it helps exactly but I'm not getting the real id. Of course I live in a blue state where you're not allowed to vote if you show ID, so there's that as well
I've had one for years. Didn't even know what it was at the time. Just knew my driver licensee looked a little different. Got a star on it, cool. As far as the privacy concerns, they already have all your info. Not only from other documents, but the info they can glean from communications... This one doesn't worry me a bit.
This is a good thing for the Team. It will negate all those drivers licenses that the illegals were given by the democrats and all those alternative means of ID that the democrats use to cheat. It will very likely be required to vote. So, a little pain for a significant gain. It will also likely be required for government handouts as well. We should watch what gets encoded on the back, but other than that, it is no increased threat.
It is not painless. The lines are long, wait times can be all day at least in Tennessee, and you are required to bring multiple documents to prove your name, residence, and in some cases birth records.
You do not need a real ID if you wish to carry a passport when you fly.
It appears that all renewals for driver licenses will eventually require real ID.
All drivers licenses when renewed are automatically renewed with REAL ID aspects built right into the drivers license and the license card will have a golden yellow white circle in the top right hand corner of the license with a white star in the center of the circle.
You need birth certificate to get a passport, a clearance or to register for little league football or baseball. I made a dozen copies of my kid's birth certificate so I would have them for anything they signed up for. Ironically, these requirements were in the state of Maryland, home of good fathers.
No, they are not. They did not give me real ID last year,. I had my passport, but the third ID was my Foid card. They didn't take it. She simply said, you have a passport, you are Ok.
Not entirely true. Wife updated hers a few months ago, and it says right in the license “not a form of ID”. Currently lines and parking lots are crazy full. We’ll get it done eventually, when everyone calms down. But currently we don’t fly, and don’t see a point to enter any federal buildings. So honestly I see no reason to get anything updated. Voting is unaffected.
Yea there was some sort of “get it done by (date)”, but we looked it up for Tennessee, and this program has been going on since 2005. Now I think Trump is ramping this up because it would help with whose legit and who isn’t. Also I feel it will be important for future dates such as voting or government subsidies and whatnot. So I do feel we all need to do this. But the rush currently is not needed. People are afraid they won’t be able to drive their cars in a few weeks. Ridiculous. As usual people freaked out because media or “something” freaked them out. I’ll probably do it before the end of the year.
We got ours a few years ago. It wasn’t totally painless, but not a huge deal. Lots of identifying paperwork needed. We did discover that our electric bill (account) was only in my husband’s name. THAT took some doing to get my name added to it. Kek.
Yea, name has to exactly match on birth certificate, social security card, and or passport, I had to go to social security to change something, I don’t even remember what, also birth certificate.
No, it's not painless. I won't be getting one because they want me to supply them with divorce decrees and marriage licenses from a 50 year span. I already did that each time I updated my drivers license over the last 50 years.. I'm not spending the time or money to get those documents again.
That sounds like state law. I'm 71 and have renewed my drivers license many times, several times in different states, and I've never been asked about divorce or marriages. They don't ask whether I'm married or single.
if a woman has gotten married or divorced and her name has changed they require all sorts of documents. I met a lady in line that was married 65 years and she had to return and bring her marriage certificate along with other documents.
I had a passport, and my name matched my drivers license and my SS card so I did not have to show a marriage certificate.
Is that a state requirement? I never had to provide anything additional, but I have had a known traveler ID for well over 10 yrs (I used to travel out of the country frequently and appreciated the shorter customs lines when returning to the US) and I always assumed that’s what got my drivers license updated at my last renewal. I never had to provide anyone with anything more. My license just arrived with the gold circle/white star.
For anyone that is considering getting TSA PreCheck, consider this first. If you are expecting to travel outside the USA anytime in the next 8-10 years get the Global Entry (or Sentri if just driving across the border). It costs more but TSA PreCheck is given for free. Plus you get a nice little card you may be able to use coming back into the US (if they have the machines at that airport). Regardless, it is a valid ID that proves citizenship.
I just renewed my license and got it. I've been married twice - divorced once, widowed on second one. I didn't have to bring marriage certificates or divorce papers/death certificate. I did however keep all my last names on my social security card tho. Don't know if that mattered.
I looked at it as proving I'm born here - so I decided to do it now in advance of voter ID 😁
Me either...Funny that you can use your old ID up to the deadline and one minute after the deadline...well were not sure who you are?? IF EVERYONE did not Comply...Do you think his would still be a rule?
I've heard a lot of people saying they don't plan to fly again. I didn't either until I had to fly to my Mom's funeral. Keep emergencies in mind. Sometimes you just can't drive.
I'll drive or not go. If I need to be at a funeral, the farthest I have to travel is from Missouri to Florida. It would be too stressful to fly with husband as he has dementia.😒
My take on Real ID is that it's something the Deep State introduced that Trump has repurposed for back-door voter ID. If you have to have a federal ID to vote that is only obtainable if you verify citizenship ... Isn't that what we all have been supporting?
It's the same thing Trump did with Obama's agency that was remade into DOGE.
Thank goodness it is not just me boycotting this. I can't believe how this is going forward with little objection. I'm going to have to renew my passport now. But mark my words: this year it is "Real ID" and within 10 years, it will be mandatory "Real Chip". They will be microchipping us before you can blink.
They wouldn't accept my FOID card as a valid ID. ( Odd, since the state issued the FOID card). So I have the old standard driver's license. I'm not interested in flying anywhere, anyway, with what is going on. If I really have to, I have my passport.
I used my Texas concealed weapons permit when I was working at a nuclear plant in MO. I went to go get my permanent badge the day I started, and my mag strip didn't work properly on my DL but it did on my CHL. It was a valid State ID and they had no problems with it. If I ever had to go back it wouldn't work now because it is not a Real ID, but my DL is.
Everyone should get and keep an official copy of their birth certificate anyway. I can't recall what I needed mine for but I've needed the one with the raised seal 3 times in my life so far (one of which was to get my Real ID a few years back). It can take a little while to get to you, so I'd suggest ordering one and putting it in your safe so you have it when you need it. You can make copies, but it is like a death certificate.
Sometimes you need an original and sometimes the place you are dealing with will accept a copy. (I'm still taking care of some things that are outstanding after my Mom died last September - just sent a copy 3 days ago to another place). It was even worse for my Mom because she lived in Florida. They have a short and a long form death certificate so you need to be sure which one these places will need before sending them one. PITA.
I got the Real ID a few years back when my license was reinstated. My ID previous was light years ahead of my OG learners permit, a folded piece of paper in a plastic sleeve.
I will say the durability of these Real IDs suck, other than occasional use it's never out of my wallet and it's all cracking up.
I just renewed my drivers license (NY) and declined the Real ID as I have a NEXUS ID that makes me a trusted traveler and allows travel to Canada and Mexico and Caribbean. In all my years getting IDs I’ve never had to show a marriage certificate with my birth certificate, including getting a passport and the Nexus card. My birth certificate has my first and middle name that matches my photo ID drivers license, I could produce a marriage certificate if asked but it’s never been asked.
That will probably work in many states, because the required date is not here yet. Eventually most states will realize they don't want to have multiple versions of their ID and will consolidate.
I doubt it serves any purpose, but I keep mine in a Faraday bag in the truck. I only need it for operating a vehicle. It's the law In Texas that everyone has to accept my LTC as a state ID. I had my LTC before we were constitutional carry. I keep it because it's my understanding that juries appreciate it God Forbid I ever have to protect myself or my family.
That little yellow star in the top right corner of my real ID scares me a lot less than the barcode on the back of my driver's license Id really like to know what they see when they scan that
I'm lazy so I won't be doing it. The DMV requires an appointment and then you're still stuck there for hours. I'll just renew my passport when it's time.
I got mine a few weeks ago. Long lines but relatively painless. Woman at station next to me was turned away because she didn't have proof of name change.
Stores here in North Georgia and Tennessee will not sell you beer or tobacco products without scanning the barcode on the back of your ID. So I leave and go to nearest Indian ran store and buy without being carded.
Not doing it. I can fly with passport.
Real ID has a chip in it. I don't know what bearing that has exactly, I also don't know if Passports have the same. I just don't trust anything with a chip. If it has one, there is likely a nefarious purpose.
So does your credit card.
Fine point.
I didn't have to. I have passport for long time so all I need is the old one.
I thought the REAL ID application requires proof of where you are living.
You can apply for a passport at certain post offices and receive it by mail. You can later move and no obligation to update your address.
So does a driver license.
I have observed that most states require driver's licensees to keep the DMV updated within XX number of days of any change of address.
This is the correct answer.
Thank you.
Question- what documents are needed to get a passport?
Pretty much the same as needed for a Real ID. Documents that prove citizenship.
🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯🎯 bull’s-eye my point exactly
Go to the passport office at the post office and ask them, don't ask random internet strangers. A couple of minutes with your favorite search engine will also get you a partial answer.
My old one.
Me too, no need for it if you have a passport.
Correct.
So you don't need a driver's license? Do you just avoid being pulled over, pay the fine, or have a better way out of the whole process?
This is also my plan. I don't know how it helps exactly but I'm not getting the real id. Of course I live in a blue state where you're not allowed to vote if you show ID, so there's that as well
I just flew several days ago. I wouldn't even allow them to do facial recognition. I told them no. I make them hand check my homeopathic.
The guy told me about real ID and I said, "Got it. I will use my passport instead." He didn't need to say anything else.
I've had one for years. Didn't even know what it was at the time. Just knew my driver licensee looked a little different. Got a star on it, cool. As far as the privacy concerns, they already have all your info. Not only from other documents, but the info they can glean from communications... This one doesn't worry me a bit.
💯
Yes in Texas they have been doing it on the DL for 10+ years
Exactly. You're only using government documents to get a government document. They already have the information on you.
If you can easily access your own government data, then so can the government.
This is a good thing for the Team. It will negate all those drivers licenses that the illegals were given by the democrats and all those alternative means of ID that the democrats use to cheat. It will very likely be required to vote. So, a little pain for a significant gain. It will also likely be required for government handouts as well. Tennessee is just inefficient then. Mine was issued when I changed D.Ls from Nevada to Florida. Took an hour total including the wait.
as soon as you need to renew your drivers license they make you do it........just had to renew and thats what happened
Not entirely true. Wife updated hers a few months ago, and it says right in the license “not a form of ID”. Currently lines and parking lots are crazy full. Not true in every state. Just renewed in NH with conventional license.
Already got one, it’s painless.
Took me five minutes at the DMV.
We got ours a few years ago. It wasn’t totally painless, but not a huge deal. Lots of identifying paperwork needed. We did discover that our electric bill (account) was only in my husband’s name. THAT took some doing to get my name added to it. Kek.

Not a fucking chance.
I don't even know what it is. I'm opting out of everything. Heading to the woods
Me either...Funny that you can use your old ID up to the deadline and one minute after the deadline...well were not sure who you are?? IF EVERYONE did not Comply...Do you think his would still be a rule?
Yes, just renewed our ID/DL in July of last year, no real ID for us. We don't plan to fly again, ever, so I really don't care to have it.
Good luck with that - I'm praying for you. That's what my mom died from last year.

In 2010,, after TSA was in place, I got on a plane with a Costco card and a Scuba Diver certification card as picture ID after my DL was lost....
Nope, don’t need it. Have passport and passport ID card.
I carry my passport card with my drivers license. Will get the real ID when the lines start to shorten at DMV.

Got mine a year ago, just wanted $20 to get a copy of my birth certificate.
Seems more like a money making scheme to me

I don’t think it’s a big deal now that Trump’s in office. I got mine and my husband recently got his when he renewed his drivers license.
It’s my opinion that you probably can’t avoid getting it if you want a driver’s license in your state
I got mine 5 years ago. It's called an enhanced driver's license where I am.
Psh, like the previous ones didn't?
I got the Real ID a few years back when my license was reinstated. My ID previous was light years ahead of my OG learners permit, a folded piece of paper in a plastic sleeve.

The only way to not get it is to figure out how to not need a driver’s license.
It’s probably doable, but it won’t be easy.
If you drive in Florida I think you get one.
