Maria Putin was an Orthodox Christian and had Vladimir Putin baptized when he was a baby. This was in 1952, at a time when religions were banned in the Soviet Union. Putin's mother had a major influence on Putin, and taught him Orthodox Christian values but also taught him how to hide well and fight communism and restore Russia's glory.
Putin was in the KGB, but he had a mission to save Russia. You only have the greatest influence on changing the system if you are already in the system (infiltration).
