My father was a rocket scientist in the 60s working in the industry.I actually have notebooks full of mathematical equations, and information on divert engines. They’re so old they were hand typed, and put into three wing binders with about 500 pages each.
Also, he was one of the people who was on the team that came up with the thermal protection system for the shuttlecraft to re-enter our atmosphere. I have a picture of him getting an award for that, of course he didn’t get any money or anything cause he was working for NASA/Rocketdyne/Rockwell international.
I even have replicas of divergent engines, and some other weird piece that looks like the end of a rocket engine. I took it to a metal company and they can’t figure out what type of metal it is. So I know it’s something more.

Regarding the mystery metal, there is a way you can narrow the possibilities. Get a spring scale and weigh it. Then put it and the scale under water and weigh it then. From the difference in weights you should be able to figure out the density of the metal. Then, wander through the table of the elements looking up elemental densities. My hunch is that it will have a higher density than iron, but possibly not. It will probably be a metallic element that has a high melting point. Niobium (aka columbium), tantalum, and molybdenum are examples. (If it floats, it is probably lithium and you need to get it out of water fast, with tongs. I don't know what to do next. Possibly put it under turpentine in a dry jar with a lid. But if it has been knocking around all these years in open air, it is probably not lithium.)
If you are anywhere near a reasonable aerospace or aviation museum, you might consider donating your father's papers to their collection. His work sounds so extensive, it might be editable into a textbook for publication. You might want to talk that over with a professor of astronautics or aeronautics at a nearby university that has that specialty in their School of Engineering. Please give it thought. It is a monstrous pity that so much progress is written down, but we do not bother to make it available to posterity. It would be a wonderful memorial to your father to put his work into print. My father was a rocket scientist in the 60s working in the industry.I actually have notebooks full of mathematical equations, and information on divert engines. They’re so old they were hand typed, and put into three wing binders with about 500 pages each.
Also, he was one of the people who was on the team that came up with the thermal protection system for the shuttlecraft to re-enter our atmosphere. I have a picture of him getting an award for that, of course he didn’t get any money or anything cause he was working for NASA/Rocketdyne/Rockwell international. I even have replicas of divergent engines, and some other weird piece that looks like the end of a rocket engine. I took it to a metal company and they can’t figure out what type of metal it is. So I know it’s something more.

Regarding the mystery metal, there is a way you can narrow the possibilities. Get a spring scale and weigh it. Then put it and the scale under water and weigh it then. From the difference in weights you should be able to figure out the density of the metal. Then, wander through the table of the elements looking up elemental densities. My hunch is that it will have a higher density than iron, but possibly not. It will probably be a metallic element that has a high melting point. Niobium (aka columbium), tantalum, and molybdenum are examples. (If it floats, it is probably lithium and you need to get it out of water fast, with tongs. I don't know what to do next. Possibly put it under turpentine in a dry jar with a lid. But if it has been knocking around all these years in open air, it is probably not lithium.)
If you are anywhere near a reasonable aerospace or aviation museum, you might consider donating your father's papers to their collection. His work sounds so extensive, it might be editable into a textbook for publication. You might want to talk that over with a professor of astronautics or aeronautics at a nearby university that has that specialty in their School of Engineering. Please give it thought. It is a monstrous pity that so much progress is written down, but we do not bother to make it available to posterity. It would be a wonderful memorial to your father to put his work into print. (Or, it may not be suitable, but it would be worthwhile to find out.)
