Here’s a Photoshop view of how far our Indiana hero was from the mall shooter when he terminated him.

8/10 hits at a moving target at 40 yards by a novice shooter seems pretty incredible to me. Besides skill he would also need a quality gun and optic at that distance .
Watched a vid some guy made about this. Had a target at 40 yards and shot with 3 different popular pistols. All three were effective. Of course the guy practiced quite a bit so he was pretty accurate.
But damn! How did he react so quickly? That’s some serious skills.
I hope every kid in the world sees this and wants to be like him.
Apparently the guy threw his girlfriend out of harm's way then engaged. Pretty amazing.
Also, didn't his grandad train him since birth with guns? Seems credible he was a crack shot. But what do I know as a brit 😅
My kids and grandkids are shooting from the time they are able to hold a weapon and understand the impact of what they are doing and how to safely and responsibly discharge their firearm. So about 7 or 8 they take their first shots with a 410 and 22 and about 5 or 6 with a bb gun. But they are around guns from birth and by the time they are 6 or 7 and coming to the range with me, they are comfortable with the sound and the feel of a weapon.
I have them in hunters safety classes at 9 and they are going on youth hunts with me at 10 but they have been in the field with me while I hunt as soon as they can walk and talk.
They are trained with compound bows and crossbows, handguns and rifles.
This is a way of life for my family and me, passed down from my great grandfather who was the consummate outdoorsmen. I laugh at the eco warriors who know absolutely nothing about ecology. It is the outdoorsmen, the hunters and fishermen, the sportsmen who are the true stewards of our natural birthright. All the eco warriors and politicians do is screw everything up.
When I was 7 I had a cap gun.
Funny story about those things but when I was a little dude I modified one of those cap guns with the red ring cartridges to shoot those plastic bbs since the revolving cylinder had a bore diameter equal to a bb, when I cut out some plastic. It surprisingly had a bit of ass behind it and would punch holes in paper. I ended up making a barrel out of an empty pen tube too. Thing was sweet.
You could double charge the red caps too. I used to have way too much fun with those things.
Ha, ha, yes, that is what I grew up with and my extent of knowledge about guns!!
Yes exactly, I grew up in the sticks, spent about 10 years of my 40+ life “in the city” - now live in one of the least polluted areas of the planet. I know more about the environment, and how to keep it “green and beautiful” than any of those city dwelling political hacks in Washington DC.
Wow, that is impressive skills to pass down as a legacy. Good for you and your family!!!
You do realize that you could be making money hand over fist by opening your home up to groups of kids and turning it into a summer camp? Imagine the caliber (see what I did there?) of American youth graduating from your tutelage! I'd send my kids every chance I could!
Some people have a natural ability to shoot. Watch some of the videos of shooting competitions and the shots they make without eleven trying to aim. They can close their eyes and be dead accurate. It’s amazing actually.
My youngest daughter is like that.
Sort of like the serious skills Kyle Rittenhouse displayed.
Almost like their hand was guided.
You beat me to it!
I saw that video on YT. That guy made it look way easier than it really is.
I am a novice. I've been impressed at what can be done with a 9mm Glock down range. If you have a steady hand and basic training a quality piece of equipment can make you look really good. This is doable.
9 will go through a 2x4 a 1/4 mile away.
I know I've put 10 of 15 inside of twelve inches at 100 feet with a 9mm Glock without a time constraint. I was impressed with the gun.
I have a 9 mil and all I get is shit about it being just a pop gun and a piece of junk that can barely hurt a fly! Certainly can't kill a person unless they get hit "8" times. Guess I better do some research!
People who talk like that are either A ) blowhard try hards who don't actually know anything about guns but want the biggest to show off their perceived dick size or B ) trying to use a pistol for a ridiculous purpose, like deer hunting.
I sometimes take shots at my 100yd target with an iron sights pistol (different calibers - I use old calendars for old iron sight rifles that are typically ~15" W x ~24"H). Usually get several hits on paper, one or two within 3-5" inches of center. I figure on 12" of drop at that distance, so it works out pretty well for elevation.
That being said, I'd prefer to be a lot closer if I had to take a defensive shot.
Not going to lie, but I have a hard time even hitting the target at 40 yards (with my little .380 Ruger LCP II) in a controlled environment- lol - I’m setting up my iTarget pro today at 40yds and going to practice.
That's not an easy task. It may be better to focus on being really good at 10 yards or 5 yards then work out farther once you've become good at the near target.
That was a great shot! That fella saved a lot of lives!
That's some serious big dick Rittenhouse energons right there.
and he was trained by his grandfather (no other training)
Oh man, I hope grandpa is still alive to hear about what happened!
I bet grandpa was a combat vet.
40yds with a conceal carry pistol is tough. The barrel isnt very long.
Whos his grandfather ? Hickcock45? FTW!
Paul Harrell.
My husband purchased a laser bullet for his gun that allows us to practice at home. He is ex-military and hunts so he is familiar and comfortable with guns. Me on the other hand am a novice. He downloaded an app that tells you the accuracy of each shot in the session (about 8-10 groups of shots). The target can be anything but I used a bullseye target. The bullet was only $22 and the app is free so this saves having to go to the shooting range. It's a great way to practice shooting and to teach a novice how to shoot and become comfortable handling and shooting a gun. This was a very good solution to teach me about guns.
As a fellow novice I've got to say while the laser is cool and can improve accuracy you still have to get out and fire an actual gun. Nothing prepares you for that explosion except experiencing it!!
He did mention that. But as a starting point this is effective. He bought it as a "game" but found it practical to start me off. Believe me I know zip, zero, nothing about firearms so there is much to learn. We have come to a point in our society that it seems important to have this knowledge and even to carry. He has a carry permit but leaves it in his car and I have encourged him to carry at all times. Times have changed...and not for the better.
Agree. Never thought I'd be doing this.
I have a laser bullet and use it on a regular basis. I also bought a blue hand pew that is weighted to feel realistic that has a laser and auto resets each trigger pull. I use that for time drills. I use laser hit app that I am able to link up with a smart tv that shows all your hits right on screen. It's a great tool and even my better half and son use it.
I like using the bullet laser more because I can put it in my carry pew. It beats just dry firing.
I started to buy airsoft replicas 2 years ago (due to ammo prices) so we can practice more with rifles. My current rifle is battery powered and has simulated recoil. It's as close to the real thing as you can get.
I don't know what a pew is, I'll pass this on to hubby. Yeah, the app shows where you hit...pretty cool. He bought a set for $80 and then discovered you only needed the bullet because the app was free and you can use any target. He set his phone up on the camera tripod and it was pretty portable. He also had a bullet for another rifle so I can learn different firearms. He reloads bullets but I know ammo is scarce. I felt comfortable just holding and aiming and that's a good start. I feel too old to be learning but it is time so there's no time like the present.
“pew! pew! pew!” Get it now?
Okay!
Pew = firearm
Firearms are tools and as long as tools are used safely then you should never be scared. Just make sure you get proper training (your hubby should be able to provide at minimum the basics).
There is no age limit to learn how to protect yourself and your family. We have done scenarios in our home on what to do if we have an unwanted guest. Our bedroom is at the rear of the house and our sons room is towards the front. Which puts using a handgun as our second option. My go to home defence is a shotgun with small game load. And her job is to back me up with a handgun. My son knows to get under his bed. He is now 12 and almost to big to get under the bed, but that's still the plan for now.
We all use the laser and app (I use a tripod too). We actually made a fun family game doing so. It doesnt last to long, but 20-30 minutes twice a month is more practice than what I've been getting with live ammo.
In today's world it is almost a necessity. You are very wise to prepare and making part of the training a game is even better. I never really wanted to learn to use firearms (not my thing) but it just seems the right thing to do now. I may even learn to enjoy it!
I taught my kids at the range. My oldest embarrassed the boys at college when challenged to an airsoft competition. She made me proud.
That is a great skill to learn at an early age!
Awesome! I'm gonna try this for my family.
I got mixed reviews on this. No shooting range near us. Will you name the app and the the type of $22 bullet, if you are happy with it.
We use iTarget Pro - just search it up
TY
He said the app he used is Strikeman but there is also an app called Mantis. The bullet is a laser GAME (not sight) bullet that is available on Amazon at about $22.00/per caliber. I don't know what that means. I started on the 9mm handgun. The app show the accuracy of your shots on your phone (or tv?). It serves a specific purpose and I enjoyed being introduced to shooting this way. It seemed fun and cost effective but I suppose there is nothing like shooting real bullets. I have to work through this slowly.
TY
That is the kind of "gun control" that is needed.
thats some distance
That's a handy shot, if you've ever used a pistol you'd understand that's skilful.
I'm garbage with a pistol.
Gar-bage. It's embarrassing.
Good shooting young man. Real good.
Yeah. That's me too. Let me aim at something as big as a car 20ft away from me and I will shoot whoever is standing behind me somehow. I am not the one you want to rely on when a firearm is needed. My daughter on the other hand? Annie Oakley. Kek
First step is owning our current skill level. Next is acknowledging it can be improved with work. Great forward movement.
The perp probably never new what hit him or from where.
Agreed. Bad guy either was in audio exclusion or ears ringing from his own weapon use. Plus, he probably never walked through the shooting with a good guy popping up and shooting back.
Sort like getting hit by the Fist of God, you never expect it, right out of the blue BAM.
My training partner and I are gonna recreate this scenario tomorrow. Will place a human sized Thompson Target which has kill zones, at 40. We will add into the scenario othe standing targets tgat will depict a crowded mall that we have to move around to close the gap on the shooter. 10 round magazine only with no reloads. Using 3 different pistols...glock 19, cz75 compact, and sig p365sas
Make video pls
I'm now getting some info from my LE buddy's that the hero...Eli....did not actually move towards the shooter...he actually stood and fired from 40+ yards...when the cops arrived on scene, the perp was not even worth trying to revive....he had been hit 8 times, and one round went through his face. I guess we will see how we do, but to add a level of stress to the session, we will do some kettle bell runs in 90 deg heat first.
Cool, make a post about your observations and opinion. I would love to read that.
This picture is horrible for colorblind people. It took me over a minute to find the x. What a shot!
That guy should give shooting lessons to storm troopers.
He has to be related to Hickok!
Every shooting just reinforces in my mind to carry everywhere. I feel like these ff are doing the opposite of the intention. We’ve heard of 2 or 3 recently botched mass shootings because of chp/ccw carriers. No wonder the fbi wants ccw paperwork.
This is amazing. Thanks for providing this. I kept reading about how this was a remarkable shot, but it hit home with this photo.
That would be damned good shooting at that distance... and it was!
Guy could probably shoot the wings off a fly...he's got skills! Great shooting brother! Blessings for him.
I seriously want to know what his girlfriend's thoughts were going through this more than his ... did he tell her to just run or did he just act - and then she had to act ... there is so much cool to be found out about this.
He threw her aside, leaned against a pole, and downed the guy within 15 seconds of his first shot. She probably didnt even have time to fully process it until after the fact
"there is so much cool to be found out about this." Well said🐸
That would be a hell of a shot. People who don’t fire pistols often think you can hit a target that far away easy. The truth is, that is a damn hard shot to make.
Yeah, I'm pretty good with a S&W MP9, but to actually hit a moving target at that range 80% of the time amazes me. Had I been in his position, I'd have tried to get in a bit closer.
What pistol was used in the actual shooting?
I heard Springfield hellcat and glock 19. Not sure which one is true.
My weapon of choice is sig P365. One of the best out of the box freedom seed sending pews I have ever squeezed the trigger on.
My guess...Glock 19, but may have been a smaller pistol with a 10 round capacity as I think he emptied the mag on the POS so maybe a sig p365 etc..8 out of 10 hits. Indiana doesn't have mag capacity restrictions like NY and CA....if he didn't empty his mag, and stopped after he noticed the perp was dead, then glock 19 would be my guess.
A model 26 is a smaller 19 that holds maybe 10 rounds... I read he stopped shooting when bad guy went down. If he used a 26 with an even smaller open site/barrel he is incredible.
As a novice this is the question I keep asking....... how far will the bullets go? How do you judge that?
Could go miles depending on the angle.... Real question is how tight of a group you can shoot at 40 yards. They can be extremely accurate in the right hands.
1100 feet per second with a 9mm. 40 Yards is 120 feet so about a tenth of a second to target and very flat trajectory at that distance. Fire center mass so any miss still hits the torso.
Thank you, that's the kind of answer I've been looking for and no one has been able to give me.
15 seconds to fire 10 shots shows he took time to aim each shot. In the movies you see people do a mag dump without aiming between shots. Only takes a second to reacquire the target through the sites each shot and makes all the difference of whether you hit the target or not. At close range of 10 feet point and shoot is effective but at a greater distance it is important to acquire the target with the sites.
Makes sense. The range I was on doesn't allow rapid firing but being a complete newbie it always took me several seconds to re-acquire the target between shots.
To speed that up try using the sights to aim center mass rather than a bullseye. Forget the ten ring and just aim for the center of the full target. It will reduce your time drastically.
You can only answer that by training, bullet drop will change depending on firearm and ammo.
I've been shooting handgun all my life, that was very good shooting. I could do the same at the range no problem, but under stress, who knows?
Some people can shoot good in combat, but most can't. I like to think that God steadied his hand.....
As long as they're both shooting at Antifa.
Handgun vs rifle. Same but different. As a pair do not FA to FO. You’ll lose.
Whoa, that's like what? almost 100 feet? at least 80 I'd say, difficult to say in a flat image.
Good shot none the less, being that precise with a handgun at that range is no small feat.
40 yards=120feet=36.75meters
Not easy. Dude's either got big skill, or God helped. Probably both.
Wow!
As a Canadian, with no shooting experience, all I can say is.......that's a damn fine shot. Well done.
That's why I don't play RUST online. Kid's reflexes and hand eye coronation is too good !
Play Warframe
I'm a practiced shooter but my pistol accuracy falls off quickly after about 15 yards. This guy's shooting was amazing, especially with gunfire happening and innocents around. Wow
one hell of a shot.
The police said 40 yards. Does that look like 40 yards?
Yeah
That is excellent shooting, for a civilian. Really, cops unload entire magazines and hit nothing but bystanders.
