But wait, I thought we were told the Ruskies dropped fuel on it, then with some super duper flying skills, hit the rear prop (of course every fast jet pilot has these skills, just enough that it doesn't destroy the aircraft, sigh) and it made a controlled landing into the drink!

Fcuk me Disney couldn't write this any better!

Just hit the brakes and it'll fly right by. Also, dump the fuel and tea-bag the son-of-a-bitch whilst we're at it.

Dumping fuel and tea-bagging are probably part of a carefully crafted message. Especially over the Black sea, cleverly scheduled one day before the Black Hawks humilliated the Bruins. 3 to 6. The return signal. I wonder what was said...

Yeah I've seen a version of it where conveniently the screen goes off just as the Su27 does another pass, then the next frames are a prop bent over, still not buying it though, what did the Su27 hit it with, it's wing? The forces involved again would do much more damage imo.

Something is off with the whole thing!

Jettison fuel activation dumps juge amounts of fuel in a short time. The drone propeller is not designed to hit that dense of material at speed. The heavy fuel stream over the props killed the drone. Pretty clever actually. We shoulda seen that coming... If it was a jet, it would have drowned.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– DeathRayDesigner 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

I didn't build it, but I was involved in other satellite programs. Starlink is a communication system, not a surveillance system. No way would they put on a camera for a function it is not intended to perform. Nor would the camera be adequate for any meaningful photography (satellite too small to afford the size and weight of the necessary optics). You don't know anything about surveillance or reconnaissance systems, so expand your knowledge before you presume to think about it.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– DaesDaemar 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

Flares could be a defensive maneuver too, if it wasn't already jammed and flying on autopilot. Not sure if the video controls are a different frequency from the flight controls, because the plane isn't making sudden maneuvers to avoid it, while the camera is looking around.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– DaesDaemar 2 points 3 years ago +2 / -0

Footage looks legit. I'm guessing they have figured out how to disable the drone in the least destructive way possible. One plan EW jams it from maneuvering, and the other drops fuel on it, disabling its propulsion from the impact of all that liquid on a prop under load. Plane glides down to the ground, and they rercover it, extract the waypoints loaded into it and return-home location, as well as any stored footage showing what it was looking at.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– BatteryBaron 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

Why would they need to extract waypoints and return to home if there is "so much radar coverage" and theae things are "so easily tracked"? How exactly would they do that?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– DaesDaemar 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

Fair, they could track it. I guess I meant they could extract any pre-programmed flight paths that they have as contingency plans, or mission data that might give some useful information which would be stored into the drone, instead of stuff remotely streamed to it while it has an active encrypted connnection. You could also get some kind of encryption keys or other chips, etc that might help decode their communications. As any hacker and IT professional knows, if you have hands-on the machine, you have a lot more access to things than trying to connect remotely.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– OverQualified 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

That puts us at cross purposes. Like how fox news tried to appease two groups. Those wanted news and those that require stuff like "engaging and varied entertainment". Hey, they both make the $$ and that is the whole venture. Now here, we pretend the only venture is getting truth. But that is at cross purposes with the desire to always 9nly be winning and engaging and entertaining and making people's feelings feel really nice but at the same time embattled. It sucks because anons are allergic to propaganda at the same time as suffering from withdrawal from it and requiring it. Tough deal. Real tough problem.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– BumbleHill 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

Take it up with the mods. For example, right now there is a sticky that is a twitter thread that says that the real test of courage was when Biden told everyone to take the shot when it came out, but the shot came out under Trump and he was openly telling everyone to get the shot for years and a lot of the early firings happened under Trump's administration. So, the sticky is wrong, but it's there to get everyone talking and boost engagement on the site.

edit: I will probably get banned if a mod sees this because they are very sensitive to the issue.

Something is “off” with the released video.. the Russian plane approached from behind the drone and supposedly clipped a propeller that bent the tip of said propeller causing the drone to be UN-flyable. But directly towards the front of propeller area are stabilizing wings/fins that appear to be quite a bit taller than the propeller. How does a jet hit the propeller without hitting the stabilizer fins/wings? Am I missing something or was the jet pilot very lucky or very skilled??

permalink save report block reply
▲ 4 ▼
– DeathRayDesigner 4 points 3 years ago +4 / -0

The jet hit nothing; it was too far away to do that. What hit the propeller was the fuel load. Ever get smacked in the face full on from a water spray? Now imagine the water is coming toward you at hundreds of miles per hour. Bent head? Bent propeller => unbalanced propeller => unstable dynamics (shudder, wobble) => can't fly drone.

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– Wannastayfree 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

Not saying it is impossible but that is where it’s baffling… the Ruskie jet was going the same direction as the drone and was going upward above drone. If it was a large fuel dump at opposing directions (head-on) that could be like hitting a wall but those propellers are designed to fly through rain/thunderstorm so I don’t see a bent propeller tip from the dump. I think the fuel dump was to cover the cameras and be ingested into the engine causing a flameout thus a glide down..

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– DeathRayDesigner 2 points 3 years ago +2 / -0

Thunderstorms don't involve a huge dump of mass arriving at hundreds of miles an hour. The MQ-9 cruise speed is about 200 mph. The Su-27 cruise speed is hard to estimate, but quite possibly in the range of 600 mph. That would be an overtaking speed of 400 mph, much worse than any flight through a thunderstorm (which I doubt is a desired flight environment). The engine ingestion problem was already analyzed, but it strains credibility to think that the engine would ingest anything coming from the aft direction, since the intakes are facing forward. (The Su-27 went upward after the fuel dump. Standard maneuver for a what was essentially a bomb drop. The fuel kept on going.)

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 2 ▼
– BumbleHill 2 points 3 years ago +2 / -0

It did hit the stabilizer wing, it just didn't break that because it wasn't spinning at 400 mph.

Indeed, Russia dispatched a pair of Su-27 fighter aircraft to intercept the MQ-9 Reaper.

It is believed that Russian forces dispatched from Crimea recovered most, if not all, the wreckage, including the top-secret intelligence pod that had been mounted under the left wing of the aircraft. If this is the case, critical US intelligence collection capabilities would have been compromised, allowing Russia to better protect itself from sensors like the one carried onboard the downed MQ-9 Reaper aircraft.

On March 14, 2023, an MQ-9 Reaper operating out of Campia Turzii was flying in international airspace over the Black Sea, west of Crimea. This was a standard flight profile for the MQ-9 Reaper, one that had the Russians concerned, given its proximity to sensitive Russian military installations.

The better question is why is an American drone in the black sea(recon and bombing locations given to ukraine)and why is america trying to use a robot to justify the start of WW3. Who gives a shit if Russia destroyed it/dropped fuel on it intentionally/unintentionally. It doesn't matter.

We just knew this entire tale of "pissing jet fuel" and ramming the drone was too incredible to believe. The MQ-9 Reaper drone with its transponder turned off was like this stealthy scene from "Animal house" as if it wouldn't be noticed.

My theory only, the turbulence from those jets would inhibit the ability of lift along with the downforce of the thrusters. The drone fell like a stone. Very similar to when gas bubbles are released under a ship. Drops like a stone.

That's not how that works

Honestly, I dont buy the "dump fuel" or tapped the propeller stuff. I think it was electronically jammed and since all comms are encrypted, the Russian's ability to do that would be a major blow to the US military, and hence not being advertised.

You can actually see the propeller is bent after the 2nd pass.

Isn't it pretty common for propellers to look bent on video due to the rolling shutter effect?

permalink parent save report block reply
▲ 1 ▼
– knight3mplar 1 point 3 years ago +1 / -0

Indeed. Also, one would think with a bent propeller there would be a lot more vibration on the video.

Defcomms are used by Def Jam to notify NORAD on when to change DEFCON.

So we can have spy balloons, but no one else can. Wait, it wasn't a balloon.. how come we are so advanced and china is not that we have spy drones and they have balloons?? Plus, that's some fancy flying for the Russians. However, by helping their enemy, our government is essentially "at war" with Russia, so in my opinion they are well within their rights to be at war with us. Just because we haven't declared it, doesn't mean we aren't in it. We shouldn't be though. So stupid.
